I told you about the gas kiln firing I was doing last week and I have to say it did NOT go as planned. It was actually a pretty serious gut punch. Damn! I had committed about a month’s worth of work into one firing and felt pretty comfortable in my decisions.

***BUT****

After regrouping and refiring 75% of them, everything turned out very nice. Maybe even a bit better than that. (Whew!) I went from a 25% success rate to 95%.(at least to my tastes)

The means in which you fire, gas or electric can make a very big difference and doing both maybe even enhanced the final appearance.

Sometimes it’s a bongo and other times it’s a bingo.

Note: the lables are just glaze notes for those friends that are incurable mudfolk. If this describes your condition I’m happy to answer specific methods and glazes.

Decided to make myself a quick clay trimmings collector for the potters wheel. This is just a plastic tub you can pick up at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or what ever your hardware store choice is.

Been a long while since I did any sgraffito with my work so I decided to just go fishin. This started as a 21” piece and it was going to have a basket weave pattern coving the inside. It has since dried some and shrunk to 19.5” and I decided it was way too busy so I removed the pattern behind the fish.

This is white clay thrown into a platter shape, trimmed after drying a day, covered in black underglaze, and finally I carve through the black to show the white clay again.

Ok, so the microwave glass fusing worked on the first time out. Very interesting even if there were a few bumps. It is at the very least a starting point.
