Dear Members,
Please join us on Thursday, May 7th at 7 pm for our next monthly presentation at Buckalew’s:
Navigating Change Across Oceans: Women in Maritime Piloting
Captain Colleen Moran & Captain Kate Delisky
Captain Colleen L. Moran is a highly respected maritime professional and a trailblazer in her field. In 1994, she became the first female river pilot with the Pilots’ Association for the Bay and River Delaware which incorporated in 1896. Captain Moran holds First Class Unlimited Pilotage issued by both the state of Delaware and the United States Coast Guard for the Bay and River Delaware from Sea to Newbold, its tributaries and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. She is responsible for the safe and efficient passage of foreign flagged vessels calling to the ports along the route. Captain Moran uses her deep local knowledge of these waterways, ship handling expertise, and informed independent judgement to guide vessels of all sizes and types into the ports along the Delaware. Captain Moran grew up sailing small boats on the Toms River and Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, developing a lasting connection to maritime life. She graduated from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland in1993, and was taken apprentice in 1994. After serving a four year apprenticeship with the Pilots’ Association, she went full pilot in 1998.
Captain Moran lives in Pine Beach, New Jersey along the shores of the Toms River with her daughter, Abigail, and their two Portuguese Water Dogs, Maeve and Fisher. When not piloting, she enjoys sailing, kayaking, fly-fishing, saltwater offshore fishing, and gardening.
Captain Kate Delisky is a Marine Pilot with the Port of Townsville in Queensland, Australia. She began her seagoing career in 1999 with Shell on tankers and has since gained extensive experience offshore on anchor handlers, supply vessels, sat diving vessels, and pipe-laying ships. Ashore, Kate has served as a VTSO and Deputy Harbour Master at Port Hedland, the world’s largest bulk tonnage port, before transitioning into pilotage.
Kate grew up in a small coastal town spending weekends sailing the family dinghy and hails from a maritime family. Her father and eldest brother both spent time at sea during her childhood, fostering her lifelong connection to the ocean.
As one of the few women in such a high-responsibility role, Kate is a strong example of the evolving maritime industry, inspiring a new generation of young women to explore the diverse and rewarding career opportunities the maritime sector offers.
