🗺️ A Campus with Two Histories
This map shows how one piece of land in Beaufort has carried two educational legacies.
On the top: the historic Mather School, founded in 1868 to educate the daughters of formerly enslaved families.
On the bottom: the current Technical College of the Lowcountry, which continues the mission of learning and opportunity on the same grounds.
📍 From Howard Hall to Coltrane Hall, and now to Health Sciences and Workforce Development, every building reflects a new chapter in a long story of education, resilience, and community service.

🎬 The 1949 short film “Good News” told the story of “Willie Mae Jackson,” a young woman who worked in the cotton fields of the Lowcountry and attended the Mather School to create a better future.
🎞️ Originally made to raise money for the school, it was later rediscovered by archivists and preserved as an important piece of African American history.
✍️ It reminds us that education changes lives and that those stories are worth saving.

🥊 In 1968, world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier came home to Beaufort and visited Mather School.
A local hero who proved that dreams born here could reach the world stage. 🌎🏆

Not everyone supported Rachel Mather’s relief work after the 1893 hurricane.
Some critics thought her fundraising was “too expensive.” 📰
But history shows she helped more people with less money than even the Red Cross. 🙌

🌀 On August 27, 1893, a hurricane devastated the Sea Islands, killing up to 2,000 people.
Rachel Mather jumped into action—fundraising, distributing food and clothing, and writing a booklet to spread awareness.
She proved that education and compassion can go hand in hand. 💙

At 44, she left her teaching job in Boston to start a school for freed people’s daughters in South Carolina.
Her courage and vision changed lives for generations. 💪
