Beaufort History Museum

Beaufort History Museum Our mission is to preserve, promote and interpret the experiences of our past that influence us now and in the future.

The Beaufort History Museum was originally chartered in 1939. It has progressed to focus specifically on the deep and rich history of the Beaufort District, which is geographically bounded by the Combahee River on the north to Hilton Head on the south, reaching approximately 50 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. We manage and display the City of Beaufort’s collection of artifacts, documents and

photos, which tell in a compelling manner the fascinating stories of the area. Highlights are the arrival of Native Americans, the first settlers; the European explorations of the early and mid-16th Century; the Revolutionary War; the rice, indigo and cotton Plantation Culture; the antebellum decades, secession and the Civil War; reconstruction and growth to present times. Through community engagement, children’s programs, educational opportunities and social events the museum provides many services to visitors and local residents. The Museum comprises two distinct spaces: a larger primary area containing artifacts, photos and documents which tell the story of the Beaufort District, and an Exhibit Hall in which distinctive displays are created to focus on specific subjects of interest. We offer an ongoing program to train Volunteer Docents to lead tours and serve as community liaisons. The training curriculum covers all aspects of history relating to Beaufort. The Beaufort History Museum is an active member of our statewide (SCFM), regional (SEMC) and national (AAM) museum associations.

Generations ago, the people of Beaufort faced the 1893 Sea Island Hurricane with far fewer resources than we have today. This historic image reminds us of both the power of hurricanes and the resilience of our community. As hurricane season officially begins on June 1, take advantage of modern forecasting tools and preparedness information to help keep your family safe. Being prepared today can make all the difference tomorrow. Go to www.scemd.org and download this year’s Hurricane Preparedness Guide.

History does not sit still in Beaufort County, and on June 9th, you can follow it mile by mile!

Our friends at BC250 and USCB-OLLI present the Revolutionary War Bus Tour: Prevost's March, a full-day guided tour of the landmarks from one of the most dramatic British campaigns of the Southern War. In 1779, Major General Augustine Prévost marched his forces through South Carolina in a bold push toward Charleston. The ground he covered is still here.

Historians Dr. Steve Wise and Rich Thomas will lead the tour through Purrysburg, Fort Balfour, Old Sheldon Church, the Thomas Heyward Tomb, Port Royal Island, St. Helena Churchyard, and more, aboard a luxury coach with a restroom and WiFi.

Interesting piece of history.
U.S. Route 21 is a north-south highway that originally ran from Cleveland, Ohio, to Hunting Island State Park in here in South Carolina. Over the years, parts of the route were decommissioned or replaced by Interstate highways. Today, the highway primarily runs through South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, starting near Hunting Island State Park and passing through Beaufort and Columbia. It then continues into North Carolina & Virginia, ending near the West Virginia border.
U.S. Route 21 has great historical significance as a major route for travelers and has played a role in various migration patterns, including the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to northern cities.

The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868. Known as Decoration Day, the holiday was proclaimed by Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the Civil War.
Official recognition as a holiday began in New York in 1873. By 1890, every Union state had adopted it.
The world wars turned it into a day of remembrance for all members of the U.S. military who fought and died in service.
In 1968, Congress changed its observance to the last Monday in May, and in 1971 standardized its name as "Memorial Day". 🇺🇸
