Job Lane Farm Museum

Job Lane Farm Museum The farm museum represents “a history of the house and a history of the early days of Bedford.

"The Job Lane House is a historic house at 295 North Road in Bedford, Massachusetts. It is a 2+1⁄2-story saltbox wood-frame structure, with a side-gable roof, clapboard siding, and a stone foundation. The house was built c. 1713 by Deacon Job Lane, one of Bedford's earliest settlers, on land acquired by his grandfather (also Job Lane) in 1664 from Governor John Winthrop. The house was added to the

National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is owned by the Town of Bedford and operated as an 18th-century historic house museum."

The last House Tour of the Year is Sunday, October 26, 2025,
2 - 4 pm.
The house was built by Job Lane in 1713, when he married Martha Ruggles. The west side was added in the early 1800's by Oliver R. Abbott, when he married. The Parlor has all four walls painted by Rufus Porter, as he lived nearby in Billerica. It is not signed but it is the style of Rufus Porter. Stop in and tour the house and the timber frame barn, built in 1993, by the Friends of the Job Lane House with assistance from the Bedford Rotary Club and many others.

The house and barn are open on Sunday, October 12, 2 to 4 pm. We have two exhibits - one is a set of teacups and other dishes for tea, that were used at the Monroe Tavern in Lexington in the early 1900's. The other is a child's tea set donated by Jane Dutton and it too was made in the early 1900's, in Japan. Come and see these and enjoy a tour.

We are open today, August 10, from 2 - 4. A display of nice old dishes, we believe may be hand painted, that were at the Monroe Tavern, is now on display in the Parlor. The dishes were donated by Jo Champney, and they belonged to her husband Edwin Champney's grandfather. He rented the Monroe Tavern for a time and used these dishes there. They were probably a wedding gift.

If you think ‘selfies’ are a modern phenomena, think again!
At the Job Lane Farm Museum you will be able to try your hand at making a 17th - 18th
century art form, the miniature portrait, and important vision of a long-ago ‘selfie’!
Dawn Hoffmann has presented the role and materials of the 17th and18th century artist for
many years at historic Fort Fredrick (Big Pool, MD) and at other sites as well.
As a teaching artist, she believes in the power of hands-on demonstrating. When you
experience using the materials and techniques us3ed in the past, you can begin to appreciate
what it takes to make things from raw materials. Learning one thing leads to other ideas, and
the questions start to drive your curiosity to find out more. Come explore what materials,
methods, and the reasons these little paintings were so meaningful to those who treasured
them.
Participants will be able to take home their own miniature portrait! (No fees are charged for
this.)
