The Hays House

The Hays House The Hays House is a historic site built in 1788 in Bel Air, MD. Now, it is a living history museum. We are open every Sunday from 1-4pm March through December.

The Hays House is part of the Harford County Historical Society. We have tours, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.

Yay! Excellent progress!

Not only is the exterior of the Hays House receiving much-needed repairs, but the interior is also being refreshed. Thanks to a generous grant from the Dresher Foundation, Hays House is getting handmade, period-accurate window dressings and paint where needed. Both of these projects aim to improve the historical accuracy of the home's interpretation.

The Dresher Foundation is “committed to providing hope in community life. We serve those who strengthen the capacities of others to help improve lives, primarily in Harford County, Maryland.” Without their generosity, the interior improvements wouldn’t be possible—thank you!

More updates on these changes will be coming soon! Be sure to follow HSHC’s page for upcoming posts.

How to Protect Harford’s History

Our speaker is Jacob Bensen, Historic Preservation Planner for Harford County government.

To honor Historic Preservation Month, Jacob will share “How to Protect Harford’s History.” He will discuss a few of the places protected by the Harford County Historic Landmarks and Districts Program and the tools available to help you save the places that you love in Harford County.

Following the presentation, visitors can enjoy the Hays House and gardens.

This is a free event. Donations are gratefully accepted.

At last there's good news coming from the Hays House Museum!

A new committee is working on all of the components of reopening the Hays House to the public. Meanwhile, we'd love to hear from you about the types of programs and events you'd be interested in. Here are two questions to start your thought process. You can respond to either or both of the questions in the comments.

1. What types of programs and events would you be likely to attend at the Hays House Museum?

2. If you attended any of our past events, what appealed to you about the nature of the activity, and what did you especially enjoy?

Thank you!

We're starting this new year with pictures of progress on the Hays House Museum roof. The log kitchen roof was begun first because it was the most urgently in need. Check out the new copper flashing on the brick chimney!
