The Belhaven Police Department has concluded its investigation into reports of financial fraud affecting two local nonprofit organizations: the Belhaven Celebrations Committee and the Belhaven Memorial Museum.
On July 18, 2025, the Belhaven Celebrations Committee reported unauthorized transactions on its checking account. A second report was filed on August 13, 2025, by the Belhaven Memorial Museum regarding similar suspicious activity.
The investigation identified 61-year-old Veronica Ward of Belhaven, who served on the board for both organizations, as the individual responsible for the fraudulent activity.
On October 7, 2025, the Belhaven Police Department obtained warrants charging Ward with eight counts of Felony Embezzlement and three counts of Felony Identity Theft.
On October 7, 2025, Ward voluntarily turned herself in at the Beaufort County Magistrateโs Office, where she was processed and held on secured bonds totaling $54,000.00.
โThese two organizations are deeply rooted in our community, and the trust placed in those who manage their operations is critical,โ said Wesley Waters, Chief of the Belhaven Police Department. โThis case serves as a reminder of the importance of oversight and accountability in all community-based organizations. We appreciate the cooperation of both groups in bringing this investigation to a close.โ
No further information will be released at this time.
