The Bellaire Area Museum opens today for our 50th year! We are located at 202 N Bridge Street in Bellaire, Michigan. Our hours are Wednesday 12-8 and Thursday-Sunday 12-4 thru Labor Day.

Recent donation of newspapers discovered during remodeling of the original dining room of a house in the village. The newspapers are from the 1920's and 1940's, were laid flat and placed between the subfloor and linoleum. There are some editions of the Grand Rapids Press; the Antrim County Record; The Detroit Free Press, The Portland Review; The Portal and the Classmate. The Home Front, Rotogravure Supplement and comic pages shown in the photos are from The Detroit Free Press.

According to google, in the 1940s, newspapers were placed between subfloors and linoleum to smooth uneven floor boards, prevent squeaks, to provide a barrier to prevent dust and dirt from entering the living space and to provide minor insulation against drafts.

Curious to find out if anyone else has discovered historic newspapers or other items during remodeling or renovation projects in Bellaire.

The Antrim County Historical Society and the Bellaire Area Historical Society will present One-Room Schools in Antrim County by Bob Holtzman, Tuesday, May 5th, 2026 at 7:00 P.M. at the Bellaire Public Library.
Reminders about the event will be posted as it gets closer to May.
