Just sharing an article from one of our member's in regard to the Nike Site in Ohio!
A little while back the Butler County Historical Society had the opportunity to attend an event honoring veterans held at the old Nike Missile Base CD-78 just outside of Oxford, Ohio. It's fascinating to know that during the height of the Cold War, Butler County was a key component in the first line of defense against Soviet long-range bombers. The base was commissioned in March of 1960 and was taken off of the active-duty list in 1970. A few veterans who actually served or trained at this base, or others identical to it, were present and were full of information and details. The included photos are from what was once the Integrated Fire Command center. This site is now privately owned. The launching and silo site is located 1.25 miles to the northwest of this site, and was armed with Nike Hercules missiles, and is presently owned by Miami University.
The present owner is hoping to clean up, repair, and bring this historic site back to life for public events and educational tours, but decades of abandonment have made that a challenging effort.
