The Belleville Area Museum Welcome to the official page of The BAM, a cherished historical landmark over 150 years old The community's spirit of collaboration was evident.

Welcome to the official page of the Belleville Area Museum, a cherished historical landmark with a rich and fascinating history! In 1875, the community of Van Buren Township came together to build a one-story brick town hall on Main Street, a place for conducting official business that had long been held in private homes and rented spaces. Residents pooled $1,500 for the project, and unde

r the supervision of Robert Patterson Clark, William Crawford, and Thomas Quirk, the Van Buren Township Hall took shape. As construction began, the Belleville Grange (Union) No. 331 sought permission to add a second story to the hall, generously donating all the materials for their meeting place. In 1905, Belleville was incorporated as a village, and the township hall was now outside Van Buren Township's boundaries. Nevertheless, it continued to serve as a municipal facility until 1959, when new offices were constructed on Tyler Road. Over the years, The Old Township Hall has worn many hats. It has hosted town meetings and voting sessions, issued driver's licenses, collected taxes, and even housed a library. The hall has been a hub for dances, concerts, church services, service club meetings, Red Cross blood drives, and even served as a jail and an Army recruiting station. After the township offices moved to Tyler Road, the building was repurposed for various commercial ventures, including the Rotary Club Haunted House, Oxbow Realty, the Belleville Enterprise, Adventure Travel, and the Belleville Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1995, The Old Township Hall underwent a significant renovation, paving the way for the Belleville Area Museum and Historical Society to move in 1996. Subsequently, in 2019 and 2021, the museum received a fresh makeover, ensuring its continued vitality. We're proud of our Museum and we're excited to continue sharing our history with you. Museum admission is FREE, with a suggested $5 donation supporting our ongoing preservation efforts. Still owned by Van Buren Township, the Belleville Area Museum holds a special place on the State of Michigan Registry of Historic Sites. Stay connected with us to explore the past and present of this remarkable Greek revival public building as we celebrated
its 145th anniversary in 2020 and continue our journey into the future!

Reminder:

Did you know that 50% of all movies made before 1950 are lost
forever?

In this lecture, we will talk about lost film, movies, and TV,
and why so much of our recorded past is gone. Learn about the materials, rationale, and sometimes outright mistakes that led to so much of our past being intentionally discarded, lost, and even dumped in the ocean.

We will also touch on modern lost media and what, if anything, can be done to save our digital world.

Did you know...

Back in 1955, Belleville marked its Golden Anniversary with three days of celebration, parades, dances, and rides that brought the community together. To honor the occasion, the city printed a golden brochure and commissioned a brief history of Belleville, written by Miss Margaret Hope at the request of the Golden Committee. It’s a small detail, but it shows how much care went into making the anniversary feel meaningful.

This is how Miss Margaret's story begins:

"The plat of the village of Belleville was recorded on February 27, 1848, by George D. Hill, D.L. Quirk, and Robert P. Clark. The name Belleville, which means 'Beautiful Village,' was appropriately named after James Bell, a popular resident who later moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he remained until his death."

If you have a copy of this brochure or remember the celebration, we’d love to hear your stories. Feel free to share your memories in the comments or email [email protected].

Did you know…the Indigenous name for the Huron River is Giwitatigweiasibi, which translates to “burnt-oak region.”

The Huron River has been used by humans for over 10,000 years, initially serving as a source of water, food, and transportation for the Anishinaabe and Huron peoples, who were Michigan’s original settlers.

Here, Fred Fischer and his wife Cora are pictured enjoying a summer day paddling down the river. Moments like these capture the simple joys that the Huron River has offered for generations. If you have your own summer memories connected to the river, we’d love to hear your story—feel free to share in the comments or email [email protected].

Did You Know?

During World War II, the Willow Run Bomber Plant near Belleville played a crucial role in America’s war effort, producing thousands of B-24 Liberator bombers to support the Allies.

But what mattered most at Willow Run were the people behind the planes.

Women made up about a third of the workforce at Willow Run, stepping into jobs that had always been men's and quickly learning the skills needed for riveting, welding, and assembly. Their determination kept the lines moving and the factory alive while so many men were away at war.

These women, known as Rosie the Riveters, became symbols of strength and resilience. Their work did more than help win the war; it changed what was possible for women in the workplace for generations to come.

This Women’s History Month, we remember the Rosies of Willow Run and the legacy they left in southeast Michigan. Maybe you have a Rosie in your own family?

Did You Know?

One of the most famous quilts in American history is the “Dear Jane” quilt, created in 1863 by Jane A. Stickle during the Civil War. Her remarkable quilt features 169 unique blocks made from more than 5,000 tiny pieces of fabric, each carefully stitched by hand.

Inspired by this historic design, local quilters Sue Zellers and Diane Brigman created their own beautiful quilts based on the Dear Jane pattern.

Stop by the Belleville Area Museum to see these incredible quilts up close and experience the artistry and patience behind every stitch.
