In 2025, the Trump administration issued an executive order that mandated a shift in how American history is portrayed in federal institutions. The goal was to move away from “divisive or anti-American” ideology and promote a more “patriotic” narrative. How are Minnesota historians and museu...

-- 1023 Minnesota Avenue
This house has been home to some interesting Bemidji residents over the years. Its earliest known occupant was Melancthon Ibertson, one of the city’s pioneer undertakers, who was also elected Beltrami County coroner in 1908.
Later the house was home to Harold Searls, a former State Forestry Service worker, Itasca State Park pageant director, and long-time northern Minnesota schoolteacher who was also, by all accounts, wonderful company at a community gathering. He sang folk songs and Scottish ballads, and in his later years he and his wife Leona entertained crowds of retired teachers with old-time songs and country music — she on accordion, he at the microphone.
The house later passed to William Drummond, a beloved social studies teacher at Bemidji High School and devoted member of St. Philip’s Parish. Many of you will remember Mr. Drummond from your own years at the high school. A quiet house on a busy street, with more stories inside than you might guess.

On the Street Where You Live
The building that houses Raphael's Bakery and Café has been serving the everyday needs of Bemidji residents since 1908, when a partnership called Kline, Hagberg & Hormann constructed a meat market on this spot. It was no ordinary butcher shop — the new one-story compressed-brick building featured tile floors, steel-plate walls, and a large ice box, built at a cost of $6,000 to $7,000. The Bemidji Pioneer called it "one of the finest markets ever built in this section of the country."
The building's transformation came in 1921, when proprietor Alex Doran expanded it into a full two-story structure stretching 140 feet to the alley. The upper floor held eight modern apartments, each with disappearing beds and built-in kitchen. Downstairs, the Palace Meat and Grocery became a Minnesota Avenue fixture for decades. There were labor disputes, a fire in 1936, and a legendary Christmas window in 1937 painted by Roy Bly — a thirty-foot forest scene with Santa and softly falling snow. Larry Phelps, who had first come to work at the Palace back in 1921, eventually became sole owner, running the business until a new chapter began. Today, Raphael's carries on that long tradition of welcoming hungry Bemidji folks through the door.

Beltrami County Historical Society Seeks New Board Members

BEMIDJI, MN — The Beltrami County Historical Society (BCHS) is seeking community members interested in joining its Board of Directors to help guide the organization's mission of collecting, preserving, and sharing the history of Beltrami County.

Board members serve as stewards of that mission, contributing their time, perspective, and expertise to the governance of a small but active nonprofit housed in the historic Great Northern Railroad Depot at 130 Minnesota Avenue SW. The board meets on the third Thursday of each month at 4:30 PM, with a Zoom option available for those who cannot attend in person.

BCHS is especially interested in hearing from candidates with a background in accounting, bookkeeping, or treasury work, as the organization is actively seeking to fill its treasurer role. However, applicants of all backgrounds and lived experiences are warmly welcomed. The Society values board composition that reflects the full breadth of Beltrami County, including its rural communities and the Anishinaabe nations whose history is woven throughout the region's story.

Board service offers a meaningful way to support local history work — from the upcoming Carson Family Gallery permanent exhibit opening in November 2026, to ongoing oral history, archival, and public programming efforts.

Interested community members can apply directly at https://dash.pointapp.org/events/669699 or contact Executive Director Emily Thabes at [email protected] to request more information or schedule a conversation about what board service involves.
