Landscape impressionism oil paintings of the high desert and red rock country, out of Bend, Oregon. Raina Verhey is an oil painter working out of Bend, Oregon.

Her body of work focuses on high desert swells, sage brush and red rock canyons, with the occasional deep forest view. A painter for five years, Verhey has moved from deeply abstract to impressionistic landscape styles, incorporating her love for the Southwest into her daily practice. All paintings are sourced from photographs, sketches and plein airs taken in the backcountry of America, where she lives and travels several months out of the year. Verhey’s work seeks to connect to the Spirit that holds the land and us along with it. Her pieces are intended to be a vessel, to hold space for the raw, the rugged, the honest, the gutural, the genuine of life and humanity. In addition to a seasonally updated collection of original work, Raina Verhey also offers an array of fine art prints and cards.

This summer I pushed out a series called "Unto the Rising Path." These pieces are a continuation of a collection "The Hands of a Healer" which I showed at The Barn in Sisters last summer - I am still finding that these arid and rugged landscapes fall into the context of healing, strengthening and realignment. Where last years collection focused heavily of the tender nurturing of this land, these pieces challenged me to take up my excuses and walk on, which I think is the secondary part to healing: discovering your strength.

Unto the Rising Path is really about not necessarily having everything you think you need (to know, to rely on, to plan for), and taking small but courageous steps towards what you sense you are here on this earth to do and be. Further up, further in, always one step up at a time.

These pieces are showing at The Barn in Sisters until the end of the year, go see them and enjoy the beautiful structure that is The Barn!

On the Shoulder of a Brother - oil on birch.

When I am in the stretches of Southern California's great boulder country, watching the sun go down on the rocks, night settling into the nooks and cracks and shadows of the stone, I am reminded of the feeling of brotherhood. Having someone to lean on, back to back, shoulder to shoulder, when the need for company comes. It is a still sense of presence, the knowledge that they are there, and so are you, no matter what comes.

When I took this reference photo, I was drenched in sweat, juggling my tepco coffee cup (with one last sip) and my camera while scrambling into the still places to find that feeling. Sometimes there is a sweetness in the air, like the rocks and the sand and the sky are having their evening conversation, pleasantries and concerns all at once. That is what I felt here :)

In the last year I have spent a lot of time pouring through western novels, most of them for the second or third time. There are themes in my work that are fed and nourished by the themes in these books, one series being the Longmire stories. They are stories of dedication, an all-out belonging to the journey of what must be done to carry on in right-standing. In these stories, there is help from the spirit world, that place veiled so thinly when you are walking your path unto something, and these parts of the stories haunt me and have seasoned the way I think throughout the years, and certainly how I experience the landscapes i paint.

This piece is both about the elation of being on your own, wild and mysterious path, and also about the help we receive through the veil, the nudges and the whispers that point in a direction when none seems apparent. And the sweet growth that comes from continuing on, even when it is difficult.

Today marks the beginning of Art in the High Desert at Riverbend Park 5-8 !

I am bringing all the work from my summer collection “Unto The Rising Path.” Come see them in person! This collection is named and titled after the small acts of courage that direct a life. Reaching the end of your strength and continuing on, leaning on the power that carries and guides as we grow to be able to bear up under the path of the lives we want to lead and the people we want to be. Lots of mountains!

Boy howdy - it’s been a month and it’s already gone. Daily crick dips, hanging with my dog, going gollum mode for reference photos, eating loads of Boundless Farmstead tomatoes, being a big boring nerd, listening to the new recordings of the Harry Potter books after months of being worn down my my dad and matt about how good they are, tea time with my hon in the morning and late night painting sessions under the moon. There is the run down.

Working hard to get a boat load of awesome mountain and central oregon paintings done for Art in the High Desert ! So thrilled to be a part of the event this year.

Three new paintings just hit the website, that’s all I’ll do for a summer drop this year so go check em out!!

This painting is as much about my belief that there is a robust and powerful Sasquatch clan in the three sisters wilderness as it is about the meaning of having a faithful companion in the long dark - sometimes beauty is nuanced and you gotta take it as it hits ya.

Had a good time on the road, never nearly long enough but always packed full. Somehow I got salt cured and sun kissed to my hearts content all in the same two weeks. Got lots of exciting references, drank a s**t load of coffee, ran up every rock face and canyon I could get my eyes on. Now home and working for the two biggest events of my career so far. First up, a billion paintings… next up, a billion more.

A post dedicated to my coffee set up. Sunrise coffee pours after cold nights are the heart beat to my painting hunts. Big thanks to for this epic carry case that has significantly impacted my coffee carry ease. What used to be a sam gamgee bustling around with pots and pans and loose filters has become… still Samwise core but with a little more stealth… pipe to***co carried neatly next to coffee filters.

Anyhow. No body paint the scene behind me or else I’ll have to smack ya over the noggin with a pan. 👀 ENJOY. Painting coming soon, in its own weird way.
