Several years ago I was commissioned to create a portrait of this lovely couple. The setting reminded me of my favorite artist JMW Turner so I decided to paint it using cold wax and oils. I intend to paint it again using pastels.

Help!!!

Being from south Louisiana, deep in Cajun country, I grew up eating red beans and rice with sausage. I am looking for great recipes that hopefully will be similar to what I grew up eating.

Please share your recipe with me if you have one.

Remember, if your recipe does not make me want to slap my mamma (a Cajun term) then it is not worth sharing. Please share your secrets!

“Shrimp Boats Are A-Coming”

My latest 36x20 oil on canvas… Growing up in Cajun country, these sounds, smells and images are imbedded into my mind. What a wonderful way for a boy to grow up!

For the past year I have been preoccupied with developing my own style and stepped away from teaching. In 2024 I am ready to jump back into the classroom!

The first 25 years were dedicated to professional photography. The last 15 years have been spent first with digital painting and finally with impressionistic painting, oils on canvas. Sandwiched in between this as 15 years a college professor of fine art.

My workshops are for anyone regardless of experience or discipline. My Cajun Shack located on a beautiful lake in north Louisiana is the perfect backdrop for learning.

Techniques of the Masters 4-day Workshop @ Darrell's Cajun Shack studio...June 13-16

This is what we will be covering...

Day One: Introduction to Corel Painter...Students will be asked to bring their computer to the workshop and hopefully have Corel Painter installed. If you know nothing about the program, no sweat.

Day Two: Introduction to the Impressionist landscape technique. We will create a landscape oil painting using Monet, Renoir and other masters as our inspiration. You will need to bring your brushes and Water Mixable Oils with you. Canvases will be provided.

Day Three: Introduction to freehand Portrait Painting. Never have done it, Don't Worry. You will be amazed that their is a portrait painter inside of you waiting to be discovered! Evening dinner at one of the top Louisiana style restaurants in the state!

Day Four: Complete a self portrait! Take everything we have studied during the week and paint your own portrait! This will blow your mind!

Day Five: Go home and decompress, your mind will be exploding for a few days.

Here is a painting I created for a client several years ago. It is a timeless image that has been one of my favorites I have ever created.
