For the Shawnee, the confluence of two rivers was more than a geographic feature, it was a place of connection. Where waterways met, resources were abundant: fish and freshwater mussels thrived in the mixing currents, fertile floodplains supported agriculture, and wildlife gathered to drink. Canoes could move people, goods, and ideas across vast regions, making confluences strategic gathering points for diplomacy, ceremony, and exchange. Spiritually, the meeting of waters often symbolized unity, balance, and renewal, and many tribes regarded such places as sacred landscapes imbued with meaning.

Pictured below is the confluence of the Cacapon River and the Potomac river from the parking lot for Panorama Public House.

Lord Fairfax gave the 50 acres around the springs, in 1776, to the Common Wealth of Virginia to create The Town of Bath with the request that the water always stayed free and accessible because no matter your financial situation everyone deserves access to these natural healing waters. We think it is amazing we have upheld that for the last 250 years.
