Important Yellow Door Announcement
These two kids had no idea a conversation that consumed the better half of a nine hour road trip during the summer of 2010 would have resulted in partnering with and promoting hundreds of artists and makers for over fourteen years.
It was a privilege to have been able to create a space that celebrates creative, Michigan based small businesses like no other. We never dreamed Yellow Door would find such success and we're beyond grateful how it has been received and supported by all of you over the years.
We have been fortunate to renew our multi-year lease 3 times since we opened our doors. While the rental rates have steadily climbed, we've done our best to keep our space fees affordable for our creative community, however with the most recent lease increase, we believe it will be hard for many of our artists to find financial success moving forward.
Because of this harsh reality, we've had some hard conversations and discussed difficult choices. We understand this is incredibly sad news and please know our decision to close Yellow Door was not made lightly. Our hearts are heavy as we have developed longstanding relationships with so many of you and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of downtown Berkley.
We have shared this heart breaking news with our artists this past weekend and many of them are offering discounts ranging 10-50% off. If there are a few things you've had your eye on or want to grab some extra goodies from your favorite makers before they leave, this would be a wonderful time to show them some love.
We will remain open through Saturday, January 18
Our hours are Monday- Saturday 10-6, Sunday 12-5
We are open 10-4 on Tuesday for New Year's Eve and closed New Year's Day.
A Small Silver Lining...
In our many conversations about how to make the most out of this sad situation, we're taking this opportunity to give some much needed attention to our neighboring sister store, Catching Fireflies.
We set up shop on that corner over 24 years ago. We were in our mid twenties, had limited funds and a DIY attitude. With some creative problem solving and a lot of paint, we patched together our first retail space.
It has served us well over the years and we even were able to purchase the building. While we have wished to update the floors, ceilings and more, we didn't want to shut down the store for the time it would take to complete such a project.
This is when we had our a-ha moment. We have decided to move Catching Fireflies into the Yellow Door space temporarily for the remainder of the lease, while we give their space a much needed face lift for their 25th year in business.
We hope to make this transition early February. This will also allow people who have Yellow Door gift certificates come in and request cash back in case they don't end up using them before January 18.
Thank You Again!
We know this news hits hard as a lot of our dearly loved shops have closed in recent years. Thanks for your love, understanding & kindness as we move through these last few weeks together. We'll be posting more info about the sales on our socials soon.
