Here's a different point of view taken from the old water tower. The buildings in the forefront are on the west side of South Union Street. They are mostly gone now. The two small houses on Tower Alley are still there.

On South Main Street the four large houses facing west are still there and on the other side of the street a small bit of the Bethel Journal building can be seen. The back sides of the Grant Memorial Building and the Ben Franklin Store can be seen in the top right corner,

The picture isn't dated but it is before 1959.

The Bethel Museum is so fortunate to have had good photographers through the 20th century to document our changing village. Three of the most prolific photographers were John Addy, Walter Von Korff, and Oscar Sharp. Because of them we have a wealth of photos.

Both these photos were taken from basically the same angle, looking eastward on Plane Street from the south side of the street toward the intersection with Union Street.

The first is from the early 1900s and the second circa 1970. The house on the north side in the first photo was replaced with businesses. The row home further east became Shields Hardware.

And on the the south side is the village well. In later years it was replaced with a drinking fountain (that froze in the winter).

Ulysses S.Grant Statue Dedication Postponed

The Grant statue was to be dedicated in October. That date has been postponed because of unforseen issues. The statue will now be installed and dedicated on April 27, 2027. Mark your calendars now!
