Art Young Gallery

Art Young Gallery The continuation of Art Young's dream...an art gallery for his and the works of others, in Bethel Conn. In his day, Art Young was more than a household name.

From 1904 to 1942, on Chestnut Ridge Road in Bethel Conn. lived Art Young (1866 - 1943) - considered the “Dean of American Cartoonists”. On his property, he built The Art Young Gallery - a fulfillment of a childhood dream - as a way to show his work, show the work of others, as well as preserve his legacy after his death. Unfortunately, due to lack of financial resources, and declining health, the

property was sold. The voluminous collection of his artwork (he had saved nearly every piece he had ever drawn, and had agreements with publishers that all his artwork be returned) was passed to his heirs. Look at a majority of his political/social cartoons from 1910 until his death and they are just as relevant, and thus maybe even more poignant, in our times. And so, without further ado, the Bethel Historical Society, and The Bethel Museum, announce the reopening of The Art Young Gallery, just over a mile from the original location, in a building Art Young would have visited in his day. For who better than his friends and neighbors, the family to which he always returned, to lift him up once more and keep his dream alive?

Happy 150th Birthday to our beloved Bethel illustrator, Art Young.

This is his original drawing of the door of his home, which is still standing on Chestnut Ridge Road...just about one mile from where the gallery now resides.

We also have a drawing he did, of Helen Keller, sitting on the very same stairs.

Somewhere around eighteen months in the making, research-wise, although not quite so long in the planning stages...

But we've finally completed rebuilding the entire run of Art Young's magazine, Good Morning.

Running from 1919 - 1922, there have been partial collections over the years, but nothing that had every issue in one place.

And now to send it off to the printer...because oh yes, this is going to be a hardbound, in vintage cloth, 736 page tome. Pshaw for the partial pdf files on the internet - let's do this properly, neh?

One more step...

P.S. If you'd like to purchase one...

A hardbound volume of the entire run of Good Morning from 1919 - 1921 plus The Soldier - the one issue of the Art Young Quarterly from 1922

Tomorrow.

Promise it'll be moving. And very very informative.

It is shocking and stunning just how poorly the World War veterans were treated in 1919 and beyond. Maybe more shocking is that the issues they faced then, are the same issues they face 95 years later.
