Now on display is an extraordinary matching suite of rubellite tourmalines cut from material recovered during the legendary Big Find of 1972 discovery at the Dunton Quarry in Newry, Maine.

This remarkable set of near-perfectly matched, size-gradational gems was commissioned by Dale Sweatt, one of the original partners involved in the Dunton Quarry discovery, where more than a ton of gem-quality tourmaline was recovered. No finer matching set from that find is known.

At first glance, it looks like a handful of ordinary glass shards… nothing special.

Then the blacklight hits.

Uranium glass was first produced in the 19th century, when uranium compounds were added to glass for their vivid yellow-green tint. Those same properties make it unmistakable under ultraviolet light, glowing a bright green.

You can get your own piece to explore at home with a UV light. A safe and simple way to hold a piece of history in your hand.
