Is this Northern Ireland… or Downeast Maine? 🤔🪨

Along the Bold Coast in Cutler, these dramatic columns of rock rise straight out of the shoreline — the same striking formation that makes Ireland's famous Giant's Causeway a natural wonder.

Curator Myles F***h and interns Angelina Stephens and Kaleb Hecksher recently visited this site and other volcanic rock exposures across eastern Penobscot Bay and Downeast Maine, gathering context for the museum's upcoming exhibit on Maine's ancient volcanic history — a project Angelina is helping develop.

🔬 The science: what looks like ancient lava is actually diabase — an intrusive rock that crystallized from magma below Earth's surface. As it slowly cooled, it fractured into these remarkable columns.

A little bit of the cosmos, made by hand!

Back on August 8th, we had a great time at Art at the MMGM: Creating a Swirling Nebula Using Minerals with artist Posey Moulton.

Participants used Maine minerals, mica powders, paint, rope, netting, and all kinds of other materials to create their own nebula-inspired shadowboxes.

We loved seeing how differently everyone interpreted the idea of a nebula. Thanks to everyone who joined us, and to Posey for helping us bring a little art and astronomy together at the Museum!
