The Brady Museum at GWU is hosting an exhibition of the work of Carroll Sockwell, an important Black artist from the 1960s until his premature death in 1992. It is a very well done exhibition. I am pleased to have loaned most of the works to the museum for the show. I highly recommend a visit.

The NGA doubles-down on its cowardly delay of its important show on racism.

The director says the public doesn't need a white artist to explain racism. The director is wrong. Guston's art is not his attempt to "explain racism". It is a powerful and authentic explanation of his experience of racism. Guston's art reminds me of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's focus on men who suffered because of sexism--an approach she took not because men were the greatest victims of sexism but because it helped her audience understand and appreciate the problem. So, too, Guston's work helps the world understand racism. The NGA's director is misguided and demonstrating unfortunate cowardice.

I want to introduce you to Jamie Hansen. Jamie was a Provincetown fixture and though he died nearly twenty years ago he is still remembered by many friends there. Jamie was an extraordinary artist weaving together tribal imagery as commentary on human tribal behaviors. More than ever, Hansen’s works from the Saltimbanques portfolio speaks an essential message—but does so with such humor and beauty that it feels not at all preachy.
