Joan Miro was born in Barcelona April 20, 1893, the Catalan region of Spain. He moved to Paris in 1920, and under the influence of the poets and writers of Montparnasse Miro developed a style unlike any other, with organic forms and flattened two-dimensional planes drawn with sharp lines. Generally thought of as a Surrealist due to Miro’s interest in automatism, Miro’s style was influenced in varying degrees by the Dada and Surrealist movements, as well as Catalan folk art, Spanish Romanesque church frescoes, and the primitivism of Paleolithic cave paintings. Miro’s forms took on a whimsical quality with playfully distorted animal & human forms, twisted organic shapes and boldly colored geometric constructions, set against flat neutral backgrounds, mostly painted using red, blue, green and yellow.

Etching with Aquatint

Edition of 150

Marie Laurencin (1883-1956) was a French painter, printmaker, and stage designer known for her delicate portraits of elegant, vaguely melancholic women. Laurencin studied art at the Humbert Academy in Paris where she met her fellow students Braque and Picasso. She consequently became involved in the avant-garde milieu of the Cubists. Although Laurencin exhibited with the Cubist artists, she did not herself exploit the movement’s idiom. Her paintings typically are stylized depictions of pale, dark-eyed women and girls painted in pastel colours. Gertrude Stein was one of the first buyers of Laurencin’s work. Laurencin was romantically involved with the poet Guillaume Apollinaire for several years and produced several portraits of him and of their mutual friends. She illustrated several books, including a 1930 edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Her stage designs included scenery for the Ballets Russes (1924) and the Comédie Française (1928).

Jean Dubuffet’s work is marked by a rebellious attitude toward prevailing notions of high culture, beauty, and good taste. He began making art in earnest at age 41, after a stint in the army and a successful career as a wine merchant. The next four decades were tremendously prolific: he wrote poetry and theoretical texts, played jazz, experimented widely with art-making materials and techniques, and worked in many mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, large-scale outdoor sculpture, and what he called “animated painting”—works bridging painting, sculpture, dance, and theater, and featuring live performers.
