Featured in the May 2026 issue of Artforum: Suzanne Hudson reviews Jay DeFeo ‘Space Exploration’, which ran at Marc Selwyn Fine Art from January 17 - March 21, 2026.

“All nebulae and voids, forms torquing as in response to forces felt but unseen, the pieces collected here evidenced the ways in which DeFeo so improbably made shape into space. What was remarkable was how she performed this trick while simultaneously puncturing the pictorial illusion that it might otherwise leave unperturbed. Thick with marks, or kept naked apart from some central defining incident, these were evidently laboriously made works, forthrightly built and not conjured.”

‘Soul Sessions’, a career-spanning exhibition of works by artist, educator, and organizer Akinsanya Kambon (b. 1946, Sacramento, CA) is now on view across two venues in a collaboration between SculptureCenter and the Center for Art, Research and Alliances (CARA). This is the artist’s first survey exhibition presented in New York City.

This exhibition highlights Kambon’s decades-long practice across ceramics, paintings, drawings, and archival materials. Deeply informed by Kambon’s formal art training and political education, which includes serving as a Marine Corps infantryman and combat illustrator, Lieutenant of Culture for the Sacramento Chapter of the Black Panther Party, and co-founder of the Pan African Art Gallery with Susan Tama-sha Ross Kambon, the exhibition is a testament to the artist’s technical excellence, formal inventiveness, and lifelong dedication to struggles for Pan-African liberation.

A book launch for ‘The Hero Avenges’ and and artist walkthrough will take place at CARA on Saturday, May 30th at 4pm

Marc Selwyn Fine Art, in partnership with Almost Forgotten Women Artists, presents two artists from the AFWA archive - Hilda D. Levy and Betty Lane - opening Saturday, May 23, at Camden Annex in Beverly Hills.

Hilda D. Levy (1908–2001) was one of the first artists to be granted a solo exhibition by the renowned Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. An accomplished Abstract Expressionist working in Southern California during the mid-twentieth century, Levy has since fallen into relative obscurity. This exhibition marks her first solo presentation in fifty-eight years and seeks to restore her place within the history of American women artists and Abstract Expressionism.

Betty Lane (1907-1996) was an American painter who developed a distinctive visual language defined by clarity of structure, sensitivity to color, and a quiet but persistent emotional charge. Her paintings are marked by a sense of compositional restraint that gives way to an underlying intensity—an effect that lends even her most pared-down images a lasting presence. This presentation brings together eight paintings from 1929 to 1947, offering a focused look at her diverse practice.

Please join us at 427 N Camden Drive for an opening reception on Saturday, May 23rd from 5 - 7 pm

On view through July 2, 2026
427 N Camden Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Marc Selwyn Fine Art is pleased to present Chisme y Memorias, the gallery’s second exhibition with Los Angeles–based artist Joey Terrill, opening May 22 at 9953 South Santa Monica Boulevard, Beverly Hills.

In this new body of work, Terrill presents ten paintings that unfold as deeply personal narratives—part memoir, part social history—drawn from decades of lived experience within q***r, Chicano, and artistic communities. As in his earlier work, Terrill’s practice remains rooted in autobiography, but here the tone is reflective and expansive, shaped by the artist’s recent milestone of turning seventy. The exhibition’s title, Chisme y Memorias, speaks to the intertwined nature of storytelling, gossip, remembrance, and community—an understanding that life itself is constructed through shared histories, relationships, and recollection.

Please join us in the gallery on Friday May 22nd from 6-8pm to celebrate the opening with the artist.

Frieze New York 2026 opens today at The Shed. Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Ortuzar jointly present a solo booth of sculptures by Akinsanya Kambon (b. 1946, Sacramento, CA).

Kambon’s figurative ceramics are inspired by African deities, ancestral spirits, and historical figures, and are distinguished by his use of an adapted Japanese Raku firing technique. The artist approaches his kiln firings ceremonially, incorporating materials such as eucalyptus leaves and sawdust, which leave the resulting forms with richly textured, metallic surfaces.

On view through May 9: Barry Le Va
📍 427 N Camden Drive, Beverly Hills

On February 8, 2020, artist Barry Le Va (1941–2021) discussed his pioneering process-based installations with curator James Meyer at Dia:Beacon. Installed now at 427 Camden are two major installations by Le Va, marking the gallery’s inaugural presentation at its new space in Beverly Hills. The exhibition brings together ‘Eliminating Strips’ and ‘Shattered On Center, On Edge, On Corners – Two Layers at a Time (Within the Series of Layered Pattern Acts)’, two works from 1968 which exemplify the artist’s radical rethinking of sculpture during a pivotal moment in the development of Postminimalism. It follows Le Va’s recent Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein retrospective which travelled to Fruitmarket, Edinburgh and Museum Kurhaus Kleve in 2025.

427 Camden is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11am - 6pm.

Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Ortuzar will jointly present a solo booth of sculptures by Akinsanya Kambon (b. 1946, Sacramento, California) for Frieze New York 2026.

The presentation will feature the artist’s figurative ceramics, which depict Pan-African spiritual traditions and histories of Black resistance. Kambon’s sculptural work is distinguished by the use of an adapted Japanese Raku firing technique, which reflects decades of honed precision and produces richly textured, metallic surfaces through a smoke-driven process.

On May 28, “Akinsanya Kambon: Soul Sessions,” the first multi-venue survey of Kambon’s work, will open concurrently at SculptureCenter and the Center for Art, Research and Alliances (CARA) in New York.

‘Frank Bowling: Driven to Draw’ will open on June 25th at the Royal Drawing School, London.

“Frank sees drawing as a ‘first-order activity,’” his son Ben Bowling remarked at a recent event marking Sir Frank Bowling’s 92nd birthday, “a basic human need, like eating and breathing; a way to communicate.”

Spanning more than sixty years, this exhibition brings together works from Frank Bowling’s personal archive, offering a rare and intimate insight into the role drawing has played throughout his practice.
