A few weeks back we had mentioned the home of Hannah Hill located at 31 Front Street which was the location of the Beverly Union Sunday School that moved to the First Parish Church in 1820. We thought it would be neat to put a few faces to the school!

Seen here is the Bible School Class circa 1879. The image is a bit grainy due to the paper it is printed on which is a textured stock, but we thought you'd like to see it anyway.

Listed in back row (L-R): Miss Wadleigh, Miss Sarah Towne, front row (L-R): Mrs. John H. Preston, Mrs. Alice Cressey, Mrs. Lizzie Walker, Mrs Emmaline O. Beckford, Mrs. M. Jennie Eldredge, Mrs. Clara Adams, Mrs Adoniram Porter, Mrs. John B. Hill, Mrs. George Roundy.

Join us next Friday for June’s First Friday as we explore the long and fascinating history of the Rev. John Hale House & Farm!

Built around 1694, the house remained in the hands of Rev. John Hale’s descendants, though not always under the Hale name, until the late 1930s. After the property was purchased in 1937, it opened to the public later that same year, beginning its life as a historic site.

Today, Historic Beverly continues to care for this special place, including restoring the surrounding landscape to reflect what Hale descendants would have known in the nineteenth century. This month’s program will explore both the history of the house and the ongoing preservation efforts helping shape its future.

Admission is free, donations are appreciated, and registration is required. Join us for this monthly tradition of learning and discovery!

You know the Monopoly Man wears a monocle… right? 👀

Wrong.

When we rediscovered this monocle in our collection, we all had the same reaction: “Like the Monopoly guy!” Except, Mr. Monopoly (officially Milburn "Rich Uncle" Pennybags) has almost never worn a monocle. It’s one of those strange shared memories that turns out not to be true. (Though to be fair, he did sport one on some Monopoly Jr. play money in the 1990s… but we’re not sure that counts.)

While Mr. Pennybags may not have been monocled, the creators of Monopoly had a very real connection to Beverly. In 1977, Parker Brothers moved their headquarters to Beverly after outgrowing their original Salem location thanks to the success of games like Monopoly, Clue, and Risk.

The former headquarters at 50 Dunham Road (now Dunham Ridge) is still standing and used as office space today, a quiet reminder that one of America’s most iconic game companies once called Beverly home.

Have a “fact” you were convinced was true but turned out to be completely wrong? Tell us below ⬇️

📆 This Month in Revolutionary History: May Edition! 🇺🇸

The month of May played a massive role in the shaping of a new nation, tracking a path from the early sparks of rebellion to the very creation of the United States. Key milestones throughout the month include the enactment of the Tea Act on May 10, 1773, which ignited the outrage that led to the Boston Tea Party, and the historic convening of the Second Continental Congress on May 10, 1775, where George Washington was elected Commander-in-Chief of the new Continental Army.

May also bore witness to intense wartime turning points, from the devastating fall of Charleston on May 12, 1780, to the triumphant moment on May 29, 1790, when Rhode Island became the final original colony to ratify the U.S. Constitution. History isn't just found in textbooks—it lives on in the legacies left behind by those who lived through it.

Which of these major milestones surprised you the most? 👇
