While on the topic of collections, vaults and hurricanes, we're happy to say that we're planning to build an extension on the north side of the City of Biloxi Ceramics Center that would hold an elevated vault. This would alleviate much of the need to pack up the art and truck it up the road when hurricanes threaten. 'We'll be back' (as Arnold would say) to ask you for a bit of financial help when we're ready to start the project!

Speaking of hurricanes, the museum took a shellacking during Zeta. The storm surge took down our main sign and escorted a refrigerator around the 'Pods' and all the way up to the plaza! Both generators failed and our fire suppression control system was destroyed. The control room -- below-grade for some strange reason -- was flooded to the ceiling, swamping the valves and electrical panel. The City was hugely helpful in returning the fire system to functionality -- thank you!! Our staff is working to move the system to a protected location. And best of all, each of our galleries and other buildings remained totally dry and ship shape.

Did you know that EVERY TIME A HURRICANE COMES ANYWHERE NEAR, our staff has to hustle into each gallery, remove and carefully pack the art (both the museum collection and the other art on exhibit), and hoist it up onto high shelves in the strong new vault? The vault is currently on the ground floor, though, so with severe threats, the entire collection must be trucked up to Meridian or farther north. Think of all of that effort and museum down-time -- and then the work to re-mount the various exhibits. Our great staff works hard to take care of the precious assets.

We have a great new vault for our collections. Executive Director David Houston recently designed and implemented a new sub-vault to protect, organize and ventilate our collections. Heavy duty door, thorough ventilation, w***h for moving heavy items and well-organized stacks of containers.

A museum's collections are its pride and joy. It's important to keep them documented, properly valued, accounted and cared for. And repeat, repeat, repeat. Up in the highest reaches of the museum, staffers are making a comprehensive audit of our precious Ohr pots and other fine art. Take a peak at the huge inventory underway at the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art.
