Nurse. Camp Founder. Revolutionary! 🩺

During , we're spotlighting an American public health pioneer.

Pauline Bray Fletcher, a graduate of Alabama A&M University, made history as the first Black registered nurse in Alabama and the first Black public health official in the state in 1909.

But she didn't stop there. Her tireless work with the Jefferson County Anti-Tuberculosis Association led her to found Camp Margaret Murray Washington, now known as Camp Fletcher (located in Bessemer), creating a much-needed sanctuary where Black children and women could heal, recuperate, and enjoy nature. In doing so, she defied societal norms and showcased why courage and perseverance despite the odds are so important to create necessary change!

during and step inside to discover Pauline Fletcher's story alongside many other unsung voices that shaped our state's legacy as we commemorate . Her courage is the very definition of , and her story is one our state has waited too long to tell.
