What happens when art challenges what you expect? 👀

"Disruption!" invites you to look beyond the surface and consider how artists can challenge conventions, question historical narratives, and inspire us to see the world differently.

Featuring works from the Museum’s permanent collection, "Disruption!" is now on view in the Howard Gallery through May 2027.

Check out the details in these folding screens apart of the "Gilding the Lilies and Other Flowers in the Arts of Asia" collection focus!

Twelve chapters of the "Tale of Genji" are showcased in the full work. Each chapter illustrates episodes in the life of Genji and his family across many years. Chapters featured on the spring-summer screen include "Lady at the Bridge," "Orange Blossoms," "Plum Branch," "Wild Carnations," "Locust's Shell," and "Lavender." Chapters featured on the autumn-winter screen include "Firelight," "Fireflies," "Rack of Clouds," "Jeweled Chaplet," "Butterflies," and "Royal Outing."

Against a background of brilliant gold, butterflies and dragonflies flutter among peony and morning glory flowers that bloom in the spring and summer months. Dianthus, bell flowers, nandina, and silver grass bloom in the autumn and winter months. Showcasing flowers of the four seasons is popular in Japanese painting.

In honor of , we’re celebrating one of the cutest pups in the BMA collection! 🐾

Meet the adorable pug in this week’s , "Les Portraits de MM. de Béthune jouant avec un chien (Portraits of Marquis Béthune’s Children Playing with a Dog)" by François-Hubert Drouais.

The painting captures two young brothers teaching their pug to play the guitar—a playful scene that perfectly reflects the lighthearted spirit of the Rococo period. And honestly, we think the pug steals the show.

All icons become part of our visual culture, and Dolly Parton is no exception.

Dolly’s larger-than-life presence is represented in the Birmingham Museum of Art’s collection through a 1995 painted-wood sculpture by folk artist Denzil Goodpaster. This piece was on view in "The Original Makers: Folk Art from the Cargo Collection."

Space is limited for opening night of "Roll Call: Two Hundred Years of Black American Art"—reserve your tickets now! 🎟️

Join us for a special conversation with Richard Dial, Roscoe Hall, and Celestia Morgan, three Birmingham-area artists featured in the exhibition, and moderated by Jade Powers, Hugh Kaul Curator of Contemporary Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art.

Through photography, painting, and sculpture, the panel will explore the ways personal narrative, cultural memory, and lived experience shape each artist’s practice while reflecting broader histories tied to race, place, labor, family, and systemic inequity in the American South. Together, the artists will discuss how their works engage both personal and collective histories, transforming regional experiences into powerful contributions to the ongoing story of Black American art.
