The local pages of the May 1952 issue of REA News featured the Sid Davis Garage. The building still stands on US Highway 12 between Black River Falls and Merrillan. Electricity allowed Sid to modernize his garage.

He stated, “I’m really dependent on electricity in this business. I use many electric motors to operate power tools, machines, and pumps. Electric motors put the coal in the furnace, pumps the water to the registers, and circulates the air about the building.”

With his location on Highway 12, Sid kept busy year-round with his garage and wrecker service. Summer days were especially long with more traffic on Highway 12, the “key route into the great Wisconsin-Minnesota lake area.”

Happy Memorial Day!

From Decoration Day to Memorial Day — different name, same purpose.

Decoration Day began after the Civil War as communities gathered to decorate graves with flowers, mourn, and remember fallen soldiers. Over time, the observance expanded to honor all American military members who gave their lives in service to our country and became officially known as Memorial Day in 1971.

This tradition was also observed here in Jackson County for generations. Shown is an 1891 photograph labeled “Decoration Day” on Main Street in Black River Falls. The photo captures the north side of the 3rd block of Main Street, today the location of Black River Country Bank. Before that, the site included the Krohn Hospital and the original Fire Hall & City Hall — the first building visible in the photo.

Images like this remind us that remembrance and honoring our veterans has long been an important part of the Black River Falls and Jackson County communities.
