An art form is a means of creative expression. I offer paintings, books, small works, and text be it a literal story, a family name, or imagery as in a symbol, logo, brand name, etc. made from the dirt itself. Other art forms are possible, specific to the needs of the individual or commercial commission.

Storytelling is a fundamental part of being human.

Stories let us share information in a way that creates an emotional connection.

Stories give us a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other's experiences.

Stories can be a guide for future actions.

Stories can create a sense of community.

In the telling, we recognize our shared humanity.

We carry the weight to tell our story.

Earth materials harvested from various places around Maison Baise in Southern France were used to create a series of ‘swiped paintings’ called “Two Souths". In this piece, 8440, land materials were swiped on a linen textile using a shard of found roofing tile - a piece I carry with me to remember this fragment of time spent in Lacoste, France.

3309 and 75 are “dirt books” created with clay from Pike Road Alabama (3309) and Blairsville, Georgia (75) layered on watercolor paper in a Moleskin album.

These dirt paintings in book form carry story on its pages. The experience of turning the page, the tactility of the material, and the sedimentary layers of color, smell, and texture of a familiar land evoke memories of these two places. As remnants shift and fall away, each turn calls me to remember the future.

I am inspired by people, their stories, and old murky photographs that keep the memories alive. 'route 1, the farm', a recent commission, was made from buckets of dirt and a found object harvested from generational farmland in Bexter, Alabama. The dirt both tells the story and maps out the land - two family heirlooms as art artifacts from this place.

oil stick, finely processed dirt, clay, and ash on 300 lb. watercolor paper, book, mounted on wood
49” x 76”

Longing emerges on top of an oil-sticked landscape of color by the gradual layering of sifted dirt and ash taken from the places I am connected to. I layered the dirt in such a way as to capture the action of dust particles visibly lingering in the air to give the painting a kinetic feel. The book bears witness to the significance of human stories written on these places.
Longing is more than a yearning for a place I am connected to - it is about the pain of loving a place that has attached me to the earth where I have encountered God.

I believe every story is worthy of recording, preserving, and telling, and holds the potential for change in the truths it discloses, be it a third generation farmer to a bottle of wine. My commission service is a collaborative effort with a specific purpose as defined by the individual or commercial space. It is my hope that your commissioned piece of art will speak to the past as well as the future and contribute to a shared discourse or common purpose in human society.
