Few readers of this iconic, military newspaper know that it was first published in Bloomfield, Missouri by a small group of Union troops during the Civil War. Those humble beginnings resulted in the formation of a newspaper that has b

een the primary news source for American troops while away from home and country. It is important for the Museum/Library to preserve the legacy, mission, and nationally significant activities of the Stars and Stripes as it tells the story of American service men and women throughout our history.

We were absolutely honored to welcome U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt to the Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library!

It is always a privilege to share our mission with those who represent Missouri on the national stage. During his visit, we took a deep dive into our rich collection, exploring the powerful, unique history of military journalism and the vital stories of the brave men and women who have answered the call of duty.

From the very first issue printed in Bloomfield during the Civil War to the incredible personal artifacts, letters, and photographs preserved within our walls, our museum stands as a living testament to the ultimate sacrifice and the enduring spirit of American service.

Thank you, Senator Schmitt, for taking the time to visit Southeast Missouri, tour our exhibits, and engage with the preservation of our nation's military heritage. Your support helps us ensure that these vital stories are never forgotten for generations to come! 🇺🇸✨

👉 Have you visited the museum lately? Plan your trip to Bloomfield and explore the history for yourself!

Help Us Restore History

The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library needs your support to restore our two M101A1 Howitzers—iconic pieces of military history that have proudly stood on our grounds for years. These artifacts urgently need professional maintenance to meet Army standards and ensure they remain a part of our museum for generations to come.

Our Goal: $5,000

We’ve teamed up with Josh Carlisle and the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology School to tackle the restoration, including sandblasting and repainting. Now, we need your help to raise $5,000 to cover materials and restoration costs.
How You Can Help:

Donate: Every dollar counts! Stop by the museum or donate online at www.nssml.org.
Spread the Word: Share this post with your friends, family, and fellow veterans!

Why Now?

The Army has notified us that these Howitzers need restoration to remain on loan and on display. We must complete this project by the end of summer to preserve these incredible artifacts.

Honoring the Ultimate Sacrifice

Inside the walls of our museum, history is told through letters home, faded photographs, and the personal artifacts of those who answered the call of duty. But today, our focus turns away from the exhibits of the past and toward the living legacy of their sacrifice.

Memorial Day is not about celebration; it is about remembrance.

It is a solemn promise to those who never made it back to their families, their hometowns, or the lives they left behind. Every freedom we enjoy today was bought and paid for by ordinary people who showed extraordinary courage when their country needed them most.

Today, we lower our flag, we pause in silence, and we remember. We remember the names, the faces, and the unfulfilled dreams of our fallen heroes.

"Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay, but we can choose to live in a way that honors their sacrifice."

To the families who carry the heavy weight of a missing piece at their table: we see you, we honor you, and we promise to never let the world forget.

How are you honoring our fallen heroes today? If you are visiting a local cemetery or pausing for the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 PM, please share a name or a memory in the comments below so we can honor them together.
