Black Laboratory of Archaeology was founded in 1965 as a research center and museum at Indiana University through the philanthropy of Eli Lilly. At the center, researchers, students, and members of the public can come together to study, learn about, and interpret archaeological and archival evidence of past people—Native American and European—who once inhabited Indiana and the American Midwest.

The newly-formed IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology brings together the rich collections of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology and the Mathers Museum of World Cultures to create a world-class museum whose collections and research resources, dynamic exhibits, engaging programming, and outreach efforts will serve IU’s education and research missions and make it a leading destination for scholars, students, and the public.

The Museum will open in 2023 after extensive renovation of the building currently housing the Mathers Museum of World Cultures and Glenn A. Black Laboratory at 416 N. Indiana Avenue on the IU Bloomington campus.
