A surprise encounter with Chuck Close beneath the streets of New York.

Installed throughout the 86th Street subway station, these monumental portraits are constructed from thousands of tiles and porcelain pieces. From afar they appear almost photographic. Up close, they become a study of color, pattern, and perception.

Featuring White Lilies, a subject the artist has returned to throughout his career, where flowers become a space to explore color, scale, and simplicity. Known for reducing images to their essential forms, Katz brings the same clarity found in his portraits and landscapes to these blooms.

White lilies unfold across a pale green ground with an airy, open composition that feels direct and unmistakably his. Part of a broader practice that has helped define postwar American painting, the work shows how Katz can make a familiar subject feel enduringly fresh.

Featuring Large Anxious Man - silkscreen with hand-applied pigment on paper, 48 × 36 in. Limited edition.

A grid of repeated “anxious” figures, abstracted faces built from looping oval forms, compressed into a saturated red field. The composition balances mechanical reproduction with physical intervention, as the hand-applied pigment disrupts the uniformity of the silkscreen. Structure holds but never fully settles.

Part of Rashid Johnson’s Anxious Men series, where repetition operates as both image and system.
