BOGGSTOWN PARK FLOOD - JUNE 7, 2008
As with the Blizzard of '78, our community will long remember the floods of 2008. June was rainy with 5" on the 4th, and another 6" early on the 7th, showing here the resulting rare flood of the Boggstown Park. The water came from the east across Boggstown Road, through the park and its south side, across a yard, and into the Joseph Boggs Society yard. Both rainy days flooded the crawlspace of the Boggs Society meeting house, and we had to replace the damaged duct work.
The flooding in the park forced the postponement of that day's Boggstown Park Sale held by the Sugar Creek Garden Club. We decided to combine it with our annual Boggstown Park Concert on June 28th.

CARLOS AND CAROLYN GRAY'S FLY-IN - AUGUST 14, 1983

Carlos and Carolyn Gray hosted two fly-ins at their home just north of Boggstown. At this second event were several ultra-lights, two bi-planes, other two and four seat airplanes, and even a hot-air balloon. Hours of food, fun, and fellowship centered around a love of flying.

Local pilots attending included Carlos Gray, Zarrell Gray, Ed Shaw, Tim Shaw, George Gardner, Harold Weaver, Carroll Craig, and Bill Gray. Ray Ives owned one of the bi-planes and was a cousin of actor Burl Ives. He stopped at the Shelbyville Airport on his way home to New York and asked for a place to eat, so they suggested flying to Carlos' and join the fun, and he even stayed the night with Carroll and Evelyn Craig.

JOSEPH BOGGS SOCIETY EVENTS

A. On Sunday April 26th, 2026 at 3pm, we are having a rededication ceremony for two pioneer cemeteries we restored, like we did for the first four, and we're now working on the last one.
1. We will learn about the cemeteries, what was done, and honor those buried there with a short ceremony by Pastor Roger McDaniel of the Boggstown Presbyterian Church.
2. We will meet at Hoover Cemetery, where in 2024 we restored the single large gravestone. Go on 100N to 1/4 mile west of Academy Road, and south on a long driveway to the headstone by a tree in the field.
3. Then we'll go to Sandhill Cemetery where we finished restoring the 66 gravestones in 2025. From Hoover, go east 2 1/2 miles on 100N, south on 600W for 1/4 mile, and park in the driveway on the east side of the road. Due to the hill, be very careful parking, and walking to the cemetery surrounded by trees on the west side. Sandhill has the grave of William Daniel, the only known Revolutionary Veteran buried in our Sugar Creek Township. THIS PHOTO is the sign we added with names on the back of the people buried there.

B. Our May 20th 7pm Quarterly Meeting program will be about the 100 years of Route 66, so come enjoy a fun evening.

C. Our free local museum will be open 1-4pm on Sundays May 31st and June 14th, at 2616 N Sand Creek Road in Boggstown.

See you there, and invite a friend!

NEW + REMINDER #2: BOGGSTOWN SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH "HOMECOMING"

1. NEW = Penny Franey plans to do a Facebook Live video for those who cannot attend, so to watch, even if you don't use Facebook, go to https://www.facebook.com/share/1KC5N1qiFq/?mibextid=wwXIfr and click on GOING or INTERESTED, so you will receive a notification before the event begins, and a reminder on Saturday morning. If you don't do the above, you can still go to the link during the event to join and watch.

2. NEW = This photo is of our back room that was added to the 1887 building in 1889 to teach school grades 1-8 until 1916, and contains many of our local history displays.

3. Here are the details from before:

1. The Boggstown Seventh Day Adventist Church was built in 1887 and used until 1993, and the building has changed very little, with the pews still being used.
2. In 1902 Boggstown Manual Training Academy was founded as a boarding school in the town by the state Seventh Day Adventists. In 1903 it moved nearby and renamed Beechwood Academy, on what is still called "Academy Road". In 1919 it moved to Cicero and renamed to the current Indiana Academy high school.
3. Our Joseph Boggs Society for Historical Preservation's local museum has been in the building since we were founded in 1997, and you can follow us at Joseph Boggs Society for Historical Preservation.
4. We are hosting a "Homecoming" open house on Saturday April 18, 2026 from 1-5pm, at 2616 N Sand Creek Road in Boggstown.
5. Boggstown residents past and present are invited to join past members of the Boggstown Seventh Day Adventist Church, as well as past and present members of surrounding SDA churches.
6. Early on we will sing some hymns from the days at Old Boggstown, share a few remembrances of Boggstown, and have plenty of time to socialize. Our museum has a few items from the church, and many displays of the history of Boggstown and Sugar Creek Township.
7. Please share this invitation with your friends, especially those who might be interested in attending.
8. For those who remember parking in the grass on the north side of the church, if it's not too soft, go ahead and park there again. Others can use our parking lot on the south side.
9. If you have photos of the church that would be good to show on 4/18, and good for our museum to have, please email them to [email protected]
10. Thanks to church member and Indiana Academy graduate Penny (Howard) Franey for helping us coordinate the homecoming.
11. We'd like to get a tentative number to expect, so drop an email if you plan to attend to [email protected], or if you have questions.Hope to see you there!
