It was an incredible experience to bring the sword of Lt. Colonel Reuben Sidwell back to Brice’s Crossroads. (Link to video at the bottom of this post).

The 108th Illinois Infantry was severely reduced in numbers by the time they were sent on the Sturgis Expedition which culminated at the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads on June 10, 1864.

Less than 150 men were in the ranks that day. Prior to Brice’s Crossroads they had been on garrison duty in Kentucky, part of the ill-fated Chickasaw Bayou landings, victorious on battlefields at Arkansas Post, Port Gibson and Champion Hill, served on mortar boats at Vicksburg and lost hundreds of men to rampant disease during their service.

Of the 145 soldiers of the 108th Illinois at Brice’s Crossroads 7 were battle casualties. An additional 107 were initially listed as “Missing” when the ragged members of the unit first reported back to Memphis following the battle. Many of those would stagger back into the safety of the Union lines in the days and weeks that followed. At least 20 were not so “lucky” and were sent to Andersonville or Cahaba prisons. Still, a handful more were never heard from again.

Come join us on the battlefield for our last “Sunset Stroll” of 2026! Tuesday October 27th.

We will gather starting at 5:15pm at the pull off on 370 just 0.2 miles east of the NPS site (see green highlighted area on map in photos in this post!).

Walk will start at 5:30pm sharp and last about 40-45 minutes. Distance covered is about 1.1 miles over uneven terrain in low light. May not be suitable for those with mobility or vision issues, participate at your own risk.

Come see some of the new developments at Brice’s Crossroads and enjoy the peaceful and serene surroundings at the hallowed ground!

At the 2026 Battlefield Seminar BCF Executive Director Graham Osborne gave an introductory program on the “exempt” soldiers who made up Gartrell’s Independent Cavalry Company of Georgia.

Gartrell’s Company is one of the least studied units that fought at Brice’s Crossroads. When the company formed in late 1863 the vast majority of soldiers were labeled as exempt from military service, and thus the Confederate Conscription laws, mostly because many of the enlistees were only 16 and 17 years old. This was was part of our 2026 Battlefield Seminar. Programs were moved inside because of the weather that day, but all presenters did great with the last minute adjustment! 7th Tennessee Cavalry unit marker installed!

The 7th Tennessee Cavalry would be in the thick of the fight in the late morning and early afternoon of June 10, 1864.

The unit faced determined opposition in Iowa cavalry troopers, and, later on, against Illinois infantrymen. They suffered heavy casualties in the first phases of the battle of Brice’s Crossroads, but they continued to push the center of the Federal line and were part of the Confederate force that secured the Crossroads, and later were part of the desperate pursuit north towards the Tennessee line.

We are very grateful to the donors (listed in full on the back of the marker in the photos of this post!) who sponsored this marker. It will help visitors better understand the battle, the movements, and the battlefield itself when visiting the hallowed ground at Brice’s Crossroads!
