Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

As we celebrate this important day, it is also a reminder that when the United States declared independence on July 4, 1776, the promise of liberty did not extend to everyone. Millions of African Americans remained enslaved and denied the freedoms expressed in our founding ideals.

Juneteenth is a time to honor freedom, reflect on our nation's history, and recognize the resilience, achievements, and contributions of African Americans throughout generations.

By remembering this history, we gain a deeper understanding of our shared journey and the ongoing pursuit of liberty and justice for all.

Happy Juneteenth
