in 1864, Mary Lurana Cade was born to parents Anne Amelia and William Cade. Orphaned at 5 months, Mary was raised by grandparents Zilpha Lurana and Solomon Shaffstall. At age eight, young Mary was given stewardship of the Robinson Tea Chest, the only known surviving tea chest from the Boston Tea Party, by her grandfather for use with her dolls and dress up clothes. Mary Lurana remained steward of the tea chest for nearly 77 years until she passed away at the age of 85 in 1949. Over the course of Mary’s life, she preserved, documented, and celebrated the history and lineage of the Robinson Tea Chest, passing it’s heritage to her children and their families. The Robinson Tea Chest and some of Mary’s provenance is on permanent display at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum.
