Joe Joe Orangias: Unsettling Colonial Objects

“Unsettling colonial objects,” an exhibition of an ongoing series of sculptures by Joe Joe Orangias and his collaborations with artist Leah Craig and scientist Frank Pega, will be presented at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design’s Brant Gallery. The series takes as it starting point colonial objects that misrepresent Indigenous Peoples in public and commercial spaces on Turtle Island (North America). Such objects have been produced and used since the instigation of settler colonial nations around the globe. Featuring sculptural transformations, this exhibition is based on Orangias’ call and action to remove colonial objects and transform public space to be more equitable for Indigenous and non-indigenous communities. The sculptures provide narratives that question issues inherent in the colonial objects, while also challenging larger issues of European and US colonialism and the role objects and monuments play in shaping culture, history and place.

Date: November 3 - November 30
Reception: November 3, 6–8 pm
Artist talk: November 3 at 7pm
