Dalí x Freud 🔥 🔥 🔥

Salvador Dalí considered Sigmund Freud to be one of the most important thinkers who ever lived, and created an edition of Freud's “Moses and Monotheism” that is a universe unto itself.

The intense images match the mystical quality of Freud's text, and the whole is contained in a gigantic box, also designed by Dalí.

As in several of his other editions, Dalí made the etchings with a diamond-point stylus, but here he had those etchings printed over color lithographs, on sheets of lambskin. The box is like a religious altar, complete with a metal relief based on Michelangelo's sculpture of Moses, a work described at length in Freud's text.

Talk about a monumental moving job!

Weighing more than 4,000 pounds, this seated statue of Ramesses II is just one of over 100 works featured in our major fall exhibition, “Maverick Kings: Three Visionary Pharaohs of Egypt’s Golden Age,” which opens September 6.

Behind the scenes, the MFA’s collections engineers specialize in the complex work of moving and installing monumental objects like this. Working very closely with our fantastic facilities crew and MFA Conservation, they make sure every work of art gets safely from point A to point B.

📅 MFA members get early access to “Maverick Kings” during Member Preview (September 2–5) before the exhibition opens to the public on September 6.

🎟️ Everyone needs a timed-entry ticket! Don’t forget—exhibition tickets include general admission, so you can explore the whole Museum during your visit.

Georgia O’Keeffe painted a star on the back of this canvas. Throughout her career, she used this personal code when she was pleased with the way a work had turned out 🌟

O’Keeffe actively sought out dramatic, even surreal-looking objects and landscapes while living in the New Mexico desert, Deeply affected by its broad vistas and colorful landscape, she took long walks in the desert, picking up animal bones and rocks.

Here, she juxtaposes a skull hanging on a bare piñon tree with a view of the flat-topped Pedernal, a mountain she could see from her home at Ghost Ranch. O'Keeffe's abrupt juxtapositions of near and far bring an element of surrealism into her work.

A cheeky little birthday post for Gustave Caillebotte 🍑

A member and major patron of the Impressionist circle of artists, Caillebotte tended to paint real Parisian men and women—out and about on the streets of the city or, as here, in more private realms. At nearly five feet tall, the painting presents an unusually intimate scene from everyday life at the grand scale once reserved for formal history subjects.

Summer in the city ☀️

Born and raised in Boston’s South End, Allan Rohan Crite found his artistic inspiration close to home. "Tire Jumping" takes place at the intersection of Northampton and Dilworth streets, where Crite kept his studio for almost fifty years.

On a fine, hot day, neighbors have taken to the street. It's an everyday scene of summer in the city, and it was that very sense of the commonplace that Crite found so compelling.
