🎨 The 2026 New England Watercolor Society Award goes to Richard Denzer for his piece "Kent/Wyeth House, Monhegan"! Here is what juror Zufar Bikbov had to say about this impressive watercolor:

"This luminous watercolor depicts the historic house known as the Kent House. Although the ocean is not visible, its presence is suggested by the clear, silvery coastal light that fills the scene. The painting’s greatest strength is its beautifully considered design. The irregular shapes and rhythms of the foreground rocks contrast with the clean geometry of the house above. They also create a sense of permanence, making the house appear firmly anchored to its rugged surroundings. The composition unfolds naturally from the building down the rocky slope toward the viewer, giving the scene a subtle sense of movement.

The values and edges are handled with great sensitivity and control. Despite its precise technique, the painting never feels rigid or overworked. It remains light, transparent, energetic, and inviting—a technically accomplished and compositionally sophisticated work, richly deserving of the Best Watercolor Award ."

🥉 Our Bronze Medal goes to "Acer Saccharum" by Jon Marshall! Juror Todd Casey shares his thoughts on the painting:

"This painting is a wonderfully painted stunning image of a tree. What put this painting over the top for all of us was the frame and how it extends the painting beyond the little gold frame. The added imagery in the frame makes us feel like we are looking through a small window, between two worlds. We all looked at this painting for quite a long time, and it was deserving of a big award!"

🥈 Our Silver Medal goes to..."Back Shore" by Mary Rose O’Connell! Juror Lynne Mehlman shares her thoughts on the work:

“Mary Rose O'Connell's landscape painting, Back Shore, depicts churning ocean waves crashing against dark rocks in a dynamic and energetic composition! Dramatic value contrasts lead the viewer's eye across the canvas while the richly painted, warm-toned rocks enhance the beautiful use of cooler colors in the water. O'Connell's sensitive observation of nature is evident in her convincing depiction of the ocean's movement and the vitality she brings to the scene.”

🥇 And the Gold Medal goes to… "Lumber Wharf" by Meghan Weeks! Juror Zufar Bikbov shares a statement on the stunning piece:

"This distinctly New England coastal scene immediately immerses the viewer in its atmosphere of sunlight, color, and invigorating northern air.

The artist’s handling of color and value is remarkably efficient. The luminous effect is created not only by direct sunlight, but also by reflected light within the shadows. Light bouncing from the street and rocks illuminates the shadowed walls and windows, filling the architecture with color and atmosphere.

With tremendous skill, the artist organizes a complex variety of architectural shapes while keeping the buildings solid, upright, and structurally convincing. Perspective and straight lines are confidently controlled, while the irregular contours of the rocks and waves feel entirely natural.

Energetic brushwork gives the painting freshness and immediacy. Warm sunlight is beautifully balanced by the cool, substantial weight of the water, making this engaging and beautifully resolved painting a deserving choice for Best in Show."
