Gosh, our wild ginger is looking so healthy after the spring rains. It grows beneath the redwood canopy of the circle of redwoods that surround the gazebo. While its roots can be used as a ginger substitute you have to take care as they can upset your tummy. The roots can be used to create a syrup to be used on pancakes or in a drink such as a cocktail as in this recipe: https://backyardforager.com/wild-ginger-syrup/

From April 16–26, Santa Cruz County will come alive with artistic energy as the Ripple Effect Arts Festival launches its inaugural 11-day, countywide celebration of creativity. Designed to showcase the region’s rich and diverse arts scene, the festival invites residents and visitors alike to explore performances, exhibitions, workshops, and interactive experiences across multiple venues.

Among the many featured events is “The Road I Call Home,” a compelling photography exhibition by Randy Bacon, hosted by the San Lorenzo Valley Museum at the Belardi Gallery and the Felton Branch Library with Felton Library Friends.

Opening with a public reception on April 23, this exhibition offers a deeply human perspective through portraiture that captures resilience, identity, and belonging. As part of the broader festival it exemplifies Ripple Effect’s mission to use art as a bridge, connecting people to stories, places, and each other.

Join us in celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary with a Patriots' Day Talk by local historian Deborah Osterberg. What led up to the battles of Lexington and Concord, why Boston was the focal point, and how the first battle set the stage for the subsequent calling for independence from Great Britain.

During her sixteen year career as an interpreter and museum professional working at national parks around the country (Minute Man National Historical Park, Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park, Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, and Mount Rainier National Park), San Lorenzo Valley Historical Society board member and Capitola Historical Museum curator, Deborah Osterberg worked and gave presentations at the Minuteman National Historical Park in Concord, Massachusetts.
