Nick Ryan Gallery is excited to introduce artist Alex Skorija.

In his paintings, Skorija constructs abstract spaces that retain the memory of familiar forms. Working across oil, gouache, ink, and distemper, he explores the tactile qualities of his surfaces through layering and varied application. His compositions are structured yet ambiguous, balancing suggested windows, silhouettes, and stacked landscapes that hover on the edge of recognition without ever fully settling into a single identity.

Skorija (b. 1988, Kansas City) lives and works in Kansas City, MO. He received his BFA from Washburn University in Topeka, KS. Recent solo exhibitions include Side by Side (2026), 3West; Slow Train (2025), Plug Projects; Study Group(2023), Kansas City Public Library; and Leadlight (2023), Kiosk Gallery. Recent group exhibitions include Pungent Pollen (2025), Utopia (Kingston, NY); Shelf Show (2025), MONUMENT (Kingston, NY); and Vessels (2024), United Colors (Kansas City).

We welcome Alex to our roster of artists. Look for Skorija’s work in an upcoming exhibition at Nick Ryan Gallery.

Thank you to DARIA Magazine and Felicity Wong for the thoughtful review of Galen Cheney: Brief Transit and Clark Derbes: Time Travelers, currently on view at Nick Ryan Gallery.

Wong writes that Galen Cheney’s paintings “capture a sense of movement and certainty amidst cacophonous backdrops of color,” while Clark Derbes’ sculptures “manipulate the viewer’s perception of the object” through warped geometry and shifting perspective.

Wong writes that “these acts of close looking allow us to destabilize interpretations,” and that together the exhibitions “challenge the limits of existing traditions of artmaking.”

We’re grateful for the coverage of these two exhibitions. Read the full review at dariamag.com or via the link in our bio.

On view through June 12, 2026.

Clark Derbes’ carved and painted wood sculptures explore perception, pattern, and form through layered geometric structures and shifts in scale. Each work is carved from solid wood — primarily maple — and developed through a meticulous process of cutting, carving, sanding, painting, and burnishing.

Clark Derbes’ work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across eleven states, and he has completed numerous public murals in Louisiana and Vermont. “Time Travelers” marks the artist’s first exhibition in Colorado.

Clark Derbes: Time Travelers is on view through June 12. Enjoy additional installation views from the exhibition. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 AM – 6 PM, and by appointment.

Galen Cheney draws on influences ranging from ancient civilizations to contemporary life and Abstract Expressionism, creating paintings that are layered, complex, and distinctly her own.

“My work is a mystery to me… I am okay with uncertainty in my work. Life is uncertain and brief—why would painting be any different?” Each painting unfolds through an intuitive process shaped by attention, experience, and chance.

Galen Cheney: Brief Transit is on view through June 12 with Clark Derbes: Time Travelers concurrently in our downstairs space. Enjoy additional installation views from the Cheney’s exhibition. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 AM – 6 PM, and by appointment. Visit our website for more details.

Galen Cheney: Brief Transit
Clark Derbes: Time Travelers

Please join us this Saturday evening to celebrate the opening of two remarkable exhibitions by Galen Cheney (North Adams, MA) and Clark Derbes (Burlington, VT).

Cheney’s paintings are layered and dynamic, drawing from ancient civilizations, contemporary urban life, and the legacy of mid-century Abstract Expressionism.

Derbes creates polychromed wooden sculptures carved from solid blocks of wood. Through geometry, pattern, and color, his work explores perception and optical complexity.

Here’s a sneak peek of both exhibitions. Join us Saturday to experience them in full.

“My work is a mystery to me that I have been mining for 40 years. I am okay with uncertainty in my work. Life is uncertain and brief—why would painting be any different?

Just as I may have intentions for the day or the year, chance intervenes and life unfolds of its own accord. I have to be awake and attentive to the unexpected, and so it is with painting. How confident I am that day, how bruised my ego, what the light is like, what my dreams were the previous night—these factors are as important as any idea I might have about how to move a painting forward.

Mine is an interior process; the not knowing is scary, addictive, and central to how I make art. A painting starts with a whiff of an idea, just enough to enter the pool. Those first strokes will not be seen in the finished painting, but are crucial to its direction.

It makes sense that the paintings are different from one another—cousins sharing DNA, yet distinct in personality and point of view. Painting is how I meet the world and feel alive during my brief transit through it.”

— Galen Cheney

Clark Derbes’ polychromed wood sculptures examine perception, material, and form. Each piece is carved from solid blocks of wood, primarily maple, and developed through a process of cutting, carving, sanding, painting, and burnishing. Using layered geometric structures, pattern, and shifts in scale, Derbes challenges spatial perception to create visual complexity.

Clark Derbes is based in Burlington, Vermont. Born in New Orleans and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he earned a BFA from Louisiana State University in 2002. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across eleven states, and he has completed fifteen public murals in Louisiana and Vermont, both independently and in collaboration.

Nick Ryan Gallery is proud to present Time Travelers, Derbes’ first exhibition in Colorado.
