The Knox Creek Heritage Center in Brantwood, WI, is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the pioneers that settled these great Northwoods. The Center held our “Late Spring Cook-Out/Kick-Off to Summer” event on Saturday, May16, 2026. The weather was perfect to host an outdoor barbecue (except being a little breezy). Although turnout was not what was expected, those who did attend enjoyed reminiscing and socializing over a great meal with grilled burgers, brats and all the sides. All of our historic buildings were open for touring and homemade multigrain bread and Pulla (a cardamom braid, sweet bread) were available. The gift shop display was also open with numerous new wares available for purchase. This is one of our four annual fund-raisers since being established in 1995 and 2026 marks our 31st year of existence, which highlights the pioneers and settlers of the area.
Please plan on joining us for our, “Mid-Summer Cook-Out” on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Come out to see the progress on the projects completed and those we plan to undertake this year, we are soliciting suggestions to maintain/restore the old Spirit Baptist Church (which is in dire need of some repairs). Ideas and volunteers are always appreciated.

The Knox Creek Heritage Center hosted a group of students from the Prentice High School on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 for Community Service Day. The group included several of the teachers and about 15 students that helped at the Knox Creek Heritage Center cleaning in our buildings in preparation for our summer events. The grounds were prepared with a large amount of brush clearing from around the buildings and in the yard, removal of excess rubbish and trash from the Main House, Keto House and the Spirit Baptist Church attic. It is truly a blessing having these young folks participating in the preservation of our site and having a little exposure to the history of the area. They definitely provide a valuable service to our community. The Board of KCHC thanks and appreciates the efforts they put in and the service they provide. Please find attached a picture of the group that helped this day;

The Knox Creek Heritage Center in Brantwood, WI, dedicated to preserving the heritage of the pioneers that settled these great Northwoods will be hosting our “Late Spring Cook-Out” on Saturday, May16, 2026. Homemade Finnish Bread and Pulla (a cardamom braid) will be available for sale. A dinner will be served with grilled burgers, brats and hot dogs (for the kids) with all the fixings and will be served from 12:00 until 1:30. This is one of our four annual fund-raisers since being established in 1995. Come enjoy the afternoon with old friends and newcomers looking to reconnect with their historic roots. We are looking for anyone who can help with putting on this event; in the kitchen, serving, cleaning up afterward. Please reach out to Kevin Wollemann; President at (715) 551-5967 to commit to helping for the day. We are also seeking individuals and families to become part of KCHC. By becoming a member you can help maintain our unique historical site. We also have several major projects planned and asking for additional funds, through donations, to make these dreams come true. Any donation of time and/or money will be greatly appreciated. Some of the buildings (we have nine) are older than 100 years…and need some TLC. We hope to solicit ideas/suggestions on what can be done to preserve the old Spirit Baptist Church which is in dire need of something. We hope to see you all there and our next event, “Mid-Summer Cook-Out” on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

The Knox Creek Heritage Center in Brantwood, WI, dedicated to preserving the heritage of the pioneers that settled these great Northwood’s presented “A Saint Urho and Saint Patrick Days Celebration” on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at the Brantwood Community Center located on Highway 8 at Stadium Road (County D North). Dinner was served starting around 12:00pm, with a soup buffet of several delicious soups, served with homemade Finnish bread, beverage, mint ice cream and warm cookies. The event opened with the “Pledge of Allegiance” and included a special thank you and recognition for Bill Hoffman who donated the property and some of the buildings to make our historical site a reality. Our annual meeting was held with the unanimous re-election of three current board members (Kevin Wollemann, Cary Wagner and Jimmie Wagner) with a notice that we still have one current board opening. Due to diminishing participation, we are also asking for additional help so we can keep this jewel in the Northwood’s going. A recap of last year’s annual meeting was included along with accomplishments completed this past year; the Keto House has been resided and painted. Our Treasurer provided an update on the Center’s financials. Upcoming projects including what repairs will be needed for the former Spirit Baptist Church, getting a well for water redone and resurfacing some kitchen cabinets to be installed in the pavilion kitchen.

Homemade Finnish Bread and Pulla along with a new “I’M FROM BRANTWOOD HEY! with Knox Creek Heritage Center (on the sleeve) T-Shirts were available for purchase.

Please find attached a few pictures from our event.

I would also like to thank all the members and volunteers that helped make this another successful event. This is one of our four annual fund-raisers and our 31st year in existence (est. 1995). We are always looking for individuals and families to donate their precious time and efforts to become part of KCHC. By becoming a member you can help maintain our unique historical site and preserve the community’s heritage.

Logan Mish from Newswatch 12 (Rhinelander) was present and provided a brief interview which aired on Newswatch 12 at 10:00pm on Sunday night. It was a nice little piece.

We also have several more projects planned and are asking for additional funds and donations of time and effort, to make these dreams come true. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Some of the buildings (we have nine) are older than 100 years…and need some TLC.

We look forward to seeing you all at our next three events held at the Knox Creek Heritage Center on West Knox Road in Brantwood, WI. The third Saturday in May (5/16) and the fourth Saturday in July (7/25) will be a “cook-out” style with Burgers, Brats and all the fixings. Our final event of the year, the third Saturday in September (9/19) will be, what is becoming, our Annual Chili Cook-Off and Pie Auction.

Picture a medieval village in the year 1350. Everyone knows everyone. The blacksmith's daughter marries the miller's son. Completely normal, right?

Except the blacksmith and the miller? Their grandmothers were sisters. Nobody remembers this. Nobody keeps records going back that far. But genetically, mathematically, it happened.

Now multiply that scenario across centuries. Across thousands of villages. Across entire continents.

Here's what should happen when you trace your family tree backward: You have 2 parents. They had 4 parents combined. Those 4 had 8 parents. The numbers double every generation, climbing exponentially into the past.

Go back eleven generations, around 300 years, and you should have 4,094 direct ancestors. Go back to the year 1400, and the math says you'd have over one million ancestors. Push back to 1100, and you'd need over one billion people in your family tree.

But here's the problem. There weren't one billion people alive in 1100. Not even close.

The math breaks. And when the math breaks, something fascinating reveals itself.

What's actually happening is called pedigree collapse. The same person appears in your family tree dozens, hundreds, maybe thousands of times. Your ancestors weren't marrying strangers from across the world. They were marrying neighbors, people from nearby villages, often distant cousins they didn't even know were related.

This wasn't scandalous. It was inevitable. Most humans lived in isolated communities of a few hundred people. Travel was rare and dangerous. You married locally or you didn't marry at all.

So instead of 4,094 unique ancestors eleven generations back, you probably have between 500 and 1,000 actual individuals. Still significant. But a fraction of what simple multiplication suggests.

And here's where it gets profound: If you're of European descent and you go back to around the year 1000, you're not descended from a select few Europeans. You're descended from nearly every European alive then who left descendants.

Every single one. The kings and the beggars. The knights and the peasants. The merchants and the farmers. If they lived around 1000 CE and have living descendants today, they're your ancestor. Multiple times over.

We're not distant relatives. We're practically siblings, separated by a few centuries.

We will hold our annual meeting with the election of officers, hear a review of the KCHC financials and will talk about completed projects and those that yet need to be completed. We will have a limited supply of “I’M FROM BRANTWOOD HEY!/KCHC T-shirts available for sale. Pre-orders can be made at the time of this event and picked up at our event in May. We would also like to compile a list of volunteers to help with some of our upcoming projects. Some of these things may occur on short notice. We look forward to seeing you all and spending some time with good company. Our poster for this event is included for your reference.
