This leaf-peeping season, we're highlighting the man who perfected it as an art form. 🍂🧡

This week on Book of the Week, Luke flips through Eliot Porter’s Intimate Landscapes, plus a few other Porter titles from our library. Where Ansel Adams gave us thundering black-and-white vistas, Porter leaned in close: a tangle of birch branches, a few maple leaves on dark water, the quiet color of a hillside most people would drive right past. Subtle, poetic, and very much what Vermont looks like out the window right now.

Today’s featured artwork from our Silent Auction is Alon Koppel’s “Empire Generating Co, Rensselaer, New York. Fuel type: Natural gas. Capacity: 2.9 TWh.”

9 days left, and we’re 34% of the way to our $13,500 goal.

This one is a true one-of-a-kind object: an archival pigment print with a translucent silk print framed in front of it. The two layers create a doubled image that shifts as you move around it, and no photo (including ours) does it justice. You really need to see this one in person.

It comes from Alon’s series State of Empire, which uses a 19th-century three-filter color process to photograph New York’s industrial sites. Anything in motion fractures into prismatic color, making time visible.

Luke Strosnider is stepping out from behind the camera to moderate a conversation with Beowulf Sheehan and Vaune Trachtman at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. They’ll talk about the surprisingly tricky job of turning a body of work, and the story behind it, into a book.

📖 The Father of the Man: Sheehan’s account, in pictures and words, of the last author portrait sitting with Cormac McCarthy, and how that day helped him see his own father more clearly.

📖 Now is Always: Trachtman’s 45 photogravures blending archival negatives, handwriting, and contemporary photography, reproduced in book form for the first time.

Two very different books, one conversation you won’t want to miss. See you Saturday 🧡

Learn the darkroom from someone who runs one.

Jackson Porter Hardin is the Book Press Coordinator and Darkroom Manager at the Center for Photography at Woodstock in Kingston, NY. On Saturday, November 14, he’s bringing that experience to our darkroom for a full-day Intro to 35mm & Darkroom Printing workshop.

In one day, you’ll load a camera, shoot a roll on a group photo walk, develop your film, read your contact sheet, and make your own silver gelatin print, with test strips, dodging, and burning along the way.

No experience needed. Total beginners and rusty darkroom regulars are equally welcome.

You’ll go home with your negatives, a contact sheet, and at least one finished print made entirely by hand. The faint smell of fixer is complimentary.

• Sat, Nov 14 | 10am to 5pm
• $260 | $235 VCP members
• Film and all darkroom materials included. Bring your own 35mm camera if you have one; a few loaners are available on request.
• Sign up now: https://vcphoto.org/intro-to-35mm/

Jackson is a Hudson Valley artist and educator who also teaches at SUNY New Paltz. His work has been shown by Red Barn Gallery, SPE, and Humble Arts Foundation.

Register at the link in bio 🧡
