Inspired by Cai Xi’s painting of the Chinese word tong (通), meaning Passing Through, Poet Toni Ortner reflects on the courage it takes to move through life’s pain, loss, and uncertainty. Through poetry and prose in Letters to the Dead and Passing Through, she honors those who have died and explores grief, the mystery of consciousness, and our enduring connections with loved ones.
Dedicated to Cai’s mother and her journey through stomach cancer, the Light series celebrates her courage, resilience, and love of life. Through the principle of Passing Through tong (通), Cai embraces the belief that even in darkness and suffering, light can emerge. Inspired by her mother’s mantra, “Leave my body — Change my bones — Transforming my being,” the series honors the power of love, transformation, and renewal.
