This historical building is almost 15,000 square feet and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wandle House, which is an acronym for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, was constructed in 1916 by the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway, with funds contributed by railroaders throughout the system. There were 62 dormitory rooms inside the building, along with a restaurant, movie theater, lib
rary (aka the reading room), bowling alley, community center and showers. Throughout the United States, railroad companies partnered with YMCA's to offer housing for railroaders as they traveled across the country. For many years, the YMCA was a hub of activity serving both the railroad and the community. During some of its busiest times the restaurant would serve almost 6,000 meals a month. The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, closed in 1960 when lodging for the railroaders was no longer needed. The building sat vacant for many years and was shuttered in 1975 after falling into disrepair. In 1976, Norfolk & Western Railway, the owners of the building donated it to the Brewster-Sugarcreek Historical Society. Today the Wandle House Museum is home to the historical society’s museum and “The Station” restaurant, which provides hearty meals to Brewster residents and visitors alike.
