‼️Calling All Artists‼️

The Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) and the Housatonic Museum of Art are currently seeking to purchase artwork by Connecticut and tri-state regional artists for Beacon Hall at CT State Community College Housatonic in Bridgeport, CT. The committee is considering two-dimensional wall mounted works of art that are not light-sensitive (i.e., works on paper and certain textiles). Interior sculptural works may be considered.

💸Budget: up to $275,000 is available to purchase a wide range of artwork by several artists.
🎨Type: Public Art & Proposals
🏢Geography: Regional (including CT and areas of New York and New Jersey)
📅Submission Deadline: December 15, 2026 @ 11:59PM (America - New York)

Thank you for coming to the ‘Telling Inclusive Stories Through Oral Histories’ panel discussion, your support means the world to us. Thank you to the speakers, Dr. Fiona Vernal, Dr. Kate Schramm, and Lyle Cairdeas, who taught us what it means to hold space for someone’s story. 🎉Tonight is the night!🎉

Join us for the opening reception of “Ellis Island: Arriving”

This collaborative project is an ode to the 275,000 patients who passed through its halls and the enduring stories they carried. Drawn to its abandoned rooms, paint-peeled walls, and shadowed traces of lives left behind, two artists developed their distinct approaches.

Leland Smith’s photographs, rich in texture, color, and tone, suggest the wonder of a newly arrived immigrant's first glimpse of an unfamiliar world. Julia Arstorp’s black-and-white collages and diptychs turn toward memory by weaving narratives of the past to reveal the hospital’s symbolic presence.

Together, their complementary perspectives invite visitors to consider the Ellis Island Immigration Hospital not only as a place where people arrived, but also as a place where stories began and still remain.
