✍️ ARTIST STATEMENT | Home isn’t a place. It’s what happens when someone shows up consistently, tenderly, without being asked. I make images of Black fatherhood because I want to show what that presence actually looks like. A hand on a shoulder. A child who falls asleep knowing someone is there. Quiet love that doesn’t announce itself but shapes everything.
I work with layered paper because identity isn’t flat. Memory builds on itself and so does a person. What I keep coming back to is this: care leaves a mark. Not a scar. More like a signature. The children in my work aren’t just held. They’re known. And that’s what makes somewhere feel like home, long after you’ve left.

Photographs by Zack Paris captured during our inaugural presentation at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair New York 2026 () featuring the remarkable wood and glass works of Candice Tavares ()

Tavares practice continues to push the boundaries of portraiture, combining hand carved wood with glass to create layered narratives of identity, beauty, and reflection. We are grateful to have shared this body of work with collectors, curators, and visitors throughout the fair.

NEW SMALL WORKS by Moses Salihou ()

In his newest body of work, Moses Salihou turns his attention toward the elegance, discipline, and quiet power of the BLACK BALLERINA. Through his signature blend of abstraction and figuration, Moses creates compositions filled with movement, texture, and emotion capturing not only the physical grace of dance, but the resilience and beauty carried within the body.

These works speak to representation and visibility. Historically, Black Ballerinas have often been underrepresented within classical dance spaces, yet they continue to redefine the narrative through strength, softness, and dedication to their craft. Moses honors that presence by allowing his figures to emerge through layered gestures and richly textured surfaces, creating moments that feel both dreamlike and deeply grounded in identity.

Each piece becomes a meditation on movement, freedom, vulnerability, and power. The result is a beautiful visual rhythm that invites viewers to pause, reflect, and connect.

BROOKE FIERCE BRONNER |

Brooke Fierce Bronner is a contemporary painter whose work explores the intimacy of everyday rituals, the quiet choreography of human connection, and the beauty of Black leisure. Rooted in scenes of life, friendly contests, and cultural memory, her paintings celebrate the ways Black people gather, talk ish, compete, and make each other better by virtue of proximity, love, and shared rhythm.

Based in Washington, DC, Bronner has exhibited in galleries throughout the region and continues to expand her practice through explorations of narrative, craft, and community.
