Ayela-Uwangue Nosawema a.k.a Wemaye

Ayela-Uwangue Nosawema a.k.a Wemaye is a Nigerian multimedia artist renowned for his introspective and emotionally charged works that delve into the complexities of the human experience. As a studio artist, Nosawema’s creative process is characterized by experimentation and innovation, as he navigates a diverse range of mediums, including acrylic, spray paint, crayon, charcoal, oils, and found objects. His paintings oscillate between abstraction and representation, featuring enigmatic figures that embody the fragility and resilience of the human spirit.

Through his use of muted color palettes, expressive brushstrokes, and deliberate obscurations, Nosawema crafts a sense of depth and mystery, inviting viewers to contemplate the intricacies of human emotion. “The cornerstone of my work is love, my work is love, and I look for love in every photograph”

Brooklyn native Jamel Shabbazz has been visually expressing the heartbeat of New York City through his lens for over 50 years. Raised in Red Hook public housing and surrounded by community, Jamels focuses on Black and Latinx New Yorkers. Shabazz said that coupled with the need to capture the dignity and honor of New Yorkers, love above all inspires his work. Representing those who are often misrepresented or prematurely defined by others.

It was an honor to partner with City Limits () and Brooklyn Arts Council () to host “Making It in New York: Art, Hustle, and the Cost of Thriving” a conversation between Shabazz and Rasu Jilani who share a history of growing up in New York public housing, exploring how arts and culture can start conversation around the changing realities of neighborhoods across New York City.

Another inspiring and beautiful chapter in our story to highlight the black experience through fine arts.

My collage works explore the complex emotions of Black girls’ experiences in the American South. Inspired by historical research and personal memory, these pieces reveal the internal elegance of subjects who are often iterations of myself at various ages. By navigating the tension of being artistically inclined, Black, and female, I aim to ground my work in both the past and the present.

The visual language here is deeply symbolic. The recurring black and white stripes represent the pattern of Black expression being interjected by Southern expectations, while the subjects’ hesitant expressions reflect a deep awareness of their environment. In contrast, the vibrant, multi-textured flared skirts signify an inherent playfulness that pushed against the restrictive household of my youth.

Descending from the lineage of artists like Romare Bearden and Faith Ringgold, I utilize what is immediately available—cloth, graphite, and paint—to relay ideas about the world. By incorporating facets of my personal life into the canvas, I create a layered narrative that honors the “psychology of place” and the enduring spirit of my subjects.
