โ€œI like to try to remember my dreams at this moment โ€“ meeting an old friend, spontaneous visions of things I read or saw awake but didnโ€™t fully process, sometimes flying, being chased by a monster unseen and unvoiced. But the memories are far from clear, rather they are shrouded in the sleep that lingers in my eyes and head, or strung through a tight neck or knotted back if the dreams were of a more anxious variety.

A haze of light lures one into Memories, Veiled, an exhibition of photographs by Sun Young Kang at Yi Gallery in Brooklyn. Itโ€™s the same haze that leaks into your sleep, causing you to press your feet into the ground of your dreams before pushing gently off, drifting to the coldness of reality until the world left behind is but a kite with uncatchable tails.โ€

Thank you, Calla Bai and Tussle Magazine for this deeply moving review of Sun Young Kangโ€™s solo exhibition.

Passing through wall after wall of translucent drapery feels like its own stations of griefโ€”a grief of utter aloneness, labored breath, rumpled bedsheets, and momentary clarity. But moving through each station, there is never a sense of being completely alone. No one is pictured in the photographs but each print carries its own presence, someone looking out a blurred windowpane in longing.

As the opening night went on, the gallery filled with more voices and movementโ€”people walking through these stations of grief at their own pace. Going through it with others rouses an altogether different experience, and I was moved by the reverence each person granted to the person in the next chamber. Whenever someone took longer in the chamber ahead, others would wait to pass, creating both an intimate and private space alongside one another.

When peering out from the inside of a chamber, you can see what is around through a translucence: other people, other rooms, dispersal of light. The diaphanous curtains give off a delicate impression at first glance, but each chamber possesses a distinct sense of being held and protected โ€“ what Robert Frost might call, โ€œa momentary stay against confusionโ€.

โ€œHer works often speak in inversions and her process conveys meticulous acts of time and attention โ€“ hundreds of strands of the artistโ€™s hair individually stitched on paper and photograph, incense burned through long scrolls of mulberry paper tracing handwritten script, hundreds of paper cubes and sewing needles suspended from the air with cotton thread. But encountering Kangโ€™s solo exhibition Memories, Veiled on opening night at Yi Gallery, I felt a perceptible shift in approach. Breaking away from intricate patterns and tightly constructed repetitions, her newest work is marked by a haunting austerity that invites viewers to dwell between restraint and release, a thin place between dreamscape and the waking world.

This will be the first work Sun Young is sharing with the world since her mother in Korea passed away during the pandemic after a years-long period of suffering from Alzheimerโ€™s. She speaks of the feeling of having nothing to hold on to: โ€œMy hometown is no longer home without my mother residing there,โ€ her show description reads. โ€œI searched hard but found no traces of her anymore. However, my mother still exists in my dreams, in a world of her own. In my subconscious, I reach out, but reality disrupts the connection.โ€

Kang conceived her newest project during an artist residency at Yaddo last winter where she found other artists also grappling with grief in their work. Artist Anne Truittโ€™s journal describes the 19th-century estate in upstate New York as โ€œa place charged with divine force. I always feel it when I enter between the granite gatesโ€ฆa curious heightening of perception.โ€ Memories, Veiled begins from this place: energetic imprints of the Yaddo mansion recorded in photographs overlaid with translucent fabric, hung between sheer curtains suspended from ceiling to floor for viewers to move through before revealing the next photograph.โ€

Within the void: reaching for memories II, 2024
Inkjet print on fine art paper, stainless steel, metal wire, translucent fabric, wood frame

A collection of small photographs, taken during Kangโ€™s residency last winter at the mansion of Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY, is suspended from the ceiling and hung on the walls. Inspired by a picture capturing the artistโ€™s late mother almost tied in her bed, all covered by translucent plastic curtains, this project represents Kangโ€™s visual exploration of the room within the motherโ€™s mind during her final years, when she was isolated due to Alzheimerโ€™s and the pandemic. It reflects her sense of isolation, longing, and struggle, as well as the uncertain reality and confusion she likely experienced. Additionally, it serves as a visual contemplation of the artistโ€™s own recurring dreams and the feelings of being unable to communicate, access, or understand her mother during that time.

Viewers are invited to experience the frustration, uncertainty, and inaccessibility depicted in the exhibition. Kang seeks to evoke a shared sense of longing and the desire to find answers. Through the use of curtains, a transparent fabric that adds to the ambiguity, viewers are placed both inside and outside. Together and alone, they become part of the projectโ€™s scene, experiencing what others have experienced. As viewers navigate the exhibition, they find themselves in a state of isolation, despite their physical presence among others. They encounter visual inaccessibility and the constant search for clarity. The lack of clear vision invites contemplation of themes such as isolation, uncertainty, and the struggle to understand and be understood.

In Memories, Veiled (2024), Kang covers and wraps a series of photographs with semi-translucent fabric. The photograph, as a medium, serves as a bridge for visual interactions. The images were originally captured through the artistโ€™s eyes and are now perceived by the audience through their own eyes. The Yaddo mansion, a recurring motif in every photograph, represents both the private and the public, inviting yet isolating. Laden with a history of grief and loss, it carries the weight of memories and the longing for connection. It serves as a visual anchor, encompassing not only the physical space but also the layers of emotions and narratives intertwined within it.

The deliberate gesture of overlaying photos with organza fabric obstructs visual perception, encapsulating the emotional weight that permeates the space. The visualization of the unapproachable realm of time and space creates a sense of distance and mystery. Viewers are invited to experience the frustration, uncertainty, and inaccessibility depicted in the work. Kang seeks to evoke a shared sense of longing and the desire to find answers. The lack of clear vision invites contemplation of themes such as isolation, uncertainty, and the struggle to understand and be understood.
