Virginia's first governor ignited the flames of revolution in 1775 with a legendary speech that you may have heard of with the words, "Give me liberty or give me death!"
Pictured is the portrait of Patrick Henry by Thomas Sully, 1815 along with a display of the whalebone paper cutter used during the speech at the Give Me Liberty: Virginia & The Forging of a Nation exhibit at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. This exhibit will soon be open at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown on July 1, 2026.

... May 30, 1765, Patrick Henry delivers his famed speech against the Stamp Act!

Henry took his seat in the legislature only ten days earlier, on May 20, as a representative of Louisa County. On May 29, Henry introduced his Stamp Act Resolves while also celebrating his 29th birthday.

The most famous dialogue from this speech was when Henry said, โ€œCaesar had his Brutus, Charles the First his Cromwell, and George the Third [Interrupted with shouts & cries of treason] may profit by their example. If this be treason, make the most of it!โ€

Thomas Jefferson was present as a 22-year-old law student at the College of William & Mary. After hearing Mr. Henry deliver his speech, he is quoted as saying, "He (Henry) gave the first impulse to the ball of revolution," as well as calling Henry the "Greatest orator to ever live."

Visit Red Hill to view the original painting of Rothermelโ€™s "Patrick Henry Before the Virginia House of Burgesses," which has been on permanent display in our museum since 1976.

Lindsey Almond accepted the Rothermel painting from the heirs of Charles Hamilton and presented it to James S. Easley, President of the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation.

๐ŸŽ‰ Happy 290th Birthday to the โ€˜Voice of the American Revolution,โ€™ Mr. Patrick Henry! It was , May 29, 1736, that Patrick Henry was born at Studley Plantation in Hanover County, Virginia, about twelve miles northeast of what would become present-day Richmond just a few years later.

๐Ÿ“… Today is a momentous day for Patrick Henry's Red Hill, Patrick Henry & his descendants, the soon-to-be newest US citizens, the VA250 initiative, and all passionate history lovers gathering together to honor a hero of the American Revolution as we celebrate 250 years as a country this year!

๐ŸŒณ The annual Patrick Henry Descendants Branch will be taking place at Red Hill this year, bringing together Mr. Henryโ€™s descendants from around the world to return to the place their Patriot ancestor once called home.

๐Ÿš 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM: The VA250 - American Revolution 250 Commission Mobile Museum Experience, โ€œOut of Many, One,โ€ will be on-site at Red Hill today and is free of admission! If you cannot visit today, donโ€™t worry; the mobile museum will be at Red Hill and open to the public from Friday, May 29, to Sunday May 31 from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. However, the mobile museum will be open from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, May 31.

๐Ÿ•š 11:00 AM: The newest United States citizens will take their oath of citizenship to become naturalized on the same ground Virginiaโ€™s Patriot once peacefully enjoyed with his family. It is a sacred privilege to become a U.S. citizen at the final home and resting place of a man who, without whom, would not be standing here today becoming citizens of the United States of America.

๐ŸŽ‚ Celebration & Honoring of Patrick Henryโ€™s 290th Birthday & Legacy: Immediately following the naturalization ceremony, gather around Patrick Henryโ€™s grave as we pay tribute and give our gratitude to Patrickโ€™s remarkable achievements during his 63 years and 8 days in this life with a wreath-laying ceremony.

๐ŸŽญ 7:00 PM: Join Red Hill and descendants of Patrick Henry at 246 The Main in Brookneal, VA, for the first-ever presentation of โ€˜Oh, Henry! A Revolutionary Life!' Patrick Henryโ€™s fifth great-grandson, Patrick Henry Jolly, will portray an experienced Patrick Henry as he fondly reminisces and recollects the memories that most helped write the story of his destiny.
