All gave some. Some gave all. Honoring all the members of our armed forces who gave what President Abraham Lincoln called "the last full measure of devotion," Memorial Day is one of the most important and solemn days on the National Mall. We remember them from every chapter of our history, starting with those who fell while fighting alongside General George Washington in the Revolutionary War. The military memorials on the National Mall are stunning tributes to hundreds of thousands of people who laid down their lives for freedom. Today we lay wreaths at these special places, but every day, walking past stone walls and metal statues, we recognize the loved and lost and offer the thanks of a grateful nation.

We certainly enjoyed Mrs. Peggy Huff of St. Louis, MO and her daughter, Laura of Smyrna, TN today at the museum! They have a lot of family history here in our community.

After Union Station was opened in 1907, planners turned their attention to the outdoor plaza. The design by architect Daniel Burnham included two granite bowl fountains, three highly elaborate 112-foot flagpoles, and the Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain located in the center of the plaza. The memorial fountain was designed by American sculptor Lorado Taft and features a statue of Christopher Columbus, a globe, and figures representing the old and new worlds. Every year on Columbus Day – authorized by legislation as a federal holiday in 1968, and first celebrated in 1971 – the National Park Service supports a commemoration event. Learn more about the memorial's history at www.nps.gov/articles/600242.htm
