📜 Monday Memories: 1865

As the Civil War came to an end in 1865, Wisconsin entered a period of growth and prosperity. 🌲

Large areas of Wisconsin’s forests were cleared, creating jobs in sawmills, planing mills, lumber mills, shingle mills, and grist mills. With more opportunities and growing prosperity, settlers were able to purchase new farm equipment, expand their farms, increase their livestock, and build more substantial homes made of lumber instead of logs. 🌾🏠

Communities also began building better schoolhouses, churches, and parsonages, helping towns and rural communities grow and develop. ⛪️📚

For Belgian settlers and their families, this period of growth helped shape the communities that would become an important part of Wisconsin’s Belgian heritage. 🇧🇪❤️

What do you think life was like for Wisconsin’s early settlers during this time? 🤔

We are the Belgian Heritage Center :)
For those of you who don't know who we are or what we do, come on over this weekend and discover for yourself!😜 We are located in the heart of the Belgian settlement area in Brussels, Wisconsin❤️ with the purpose to preserve,📜celebrate,🎉and share👫 the history and culture of the Belgian immigrants who settled in Northeast Wisconsin—one of the largest Belgian communities outside of Belgium.

We steward a historic former school building and church,⛪ and curate exhibits, artifacts, photographs, and stories that highlight immigration, early settlement life, architecture, language, religion, and traditions unique to this community.

Our mission is simple: to keep Belgian-American history alive, accessible, and meaningful for future generations.

Come on over and explore our outside displays anytime, get lost in thought, bring someone with you, or just enjoy some alone time.

Join us this Saturday, October 17th! Have we got a treat for you :) 🤭🤩

✨Lynda Drews will visit BHC on Saturday, October 17 to discuss the research behind Disposable Wives, her true‑crime book about Jean Philippe Soquet, a man long suspected in multiple deaths—including those of three wives.😔 The story follows Pauline Villiesse’s decades‑long fight for justice, set in a post–Civil War world where secrecy and reputation often outweighed truth. A talk at 10:00 will be followed by a book signing and conversation.✨

We'd love to see you there❤️
